All of us being SS types know that if the "big one comes" and you had to make hard decisions, could you do it?

We talk a hard game about stocking toilet paper, but if times warrant, can you be hard, very hard?

Here is a scenario.....what would you do?

_________________________

This is an awful scenario but one I thought would be interesting to discuss:

Let's say that we have a TSHTF situation and you have enough medical supplies and equipment for two people at the community triage unit you are assigned to...the following all enter at the same time. Who dies and who lives and why?

18 year old drug addict
65 yo doctor with heart disease
5 yo girl beautiful and otherwise healthy
30 yo prisoner (white collar)
26 yo obese housewife (4 kids)
40 yo police officer (father, husband)
I didn't read the whole thread, so not sure if you created different perimeters for these patients....very hard to triage if one doesn't know what their medical emergencies are.

So, for expediency, I'm going to imagine they will all die soon without medical intervention...but this is hard to do because, without knowing what they will recover FROM, one can't really predict if saving them will result in having made the correct decision.

Can we have a more complete scenario? Like what we are actually triaging here?

If not, I will take a bash at it anyway:

The obese housewife and police officer get to live. They are both responsible for other dependents, whose lives would then become a further liability to someone else, in a SHF situation. They should survive, if only to take care of their own. Add to this, we will need some police officers in desparate times, he is old enough to have gained some wisdom, and he has his own gun.

The obese(remember, to be clinically obese one only has to be 50 lbs overweight ;) ) wife is obviously a Fertile Myrtle and can produce more offspring to replenish the population, is still young enough to do this, being obese she has plenty of energy stored in lean times and, having four kids, she may be fat but she obviously knows how to organize and work hard. As an added bonus, she has four sources of fresh, tender young meat if times get really hard..... :D

The drug addict, while young, will not contribute much to a community effort due to looking for that next fix.

The doc, while being able to contribute much through his medical expertise, is elderly and already ill~no potential for long range plans for every day survival of population. Besides, if I can triage and handle this medical emergency, why do I need him? I either have my own doc on staff or I am proficient enough to carry on, medically speaking. :/

The 5 yr. old, though young and healthy, can also contribute little in a population that is working hard to survive...she can merely be another liability and dependent, with little to contribute towards the big picture.

The prisoner? Though only white collar crime committed, likely to continue his selfish, it's all about me attitude and not contribute towards community efforts either.

My answers may be different if more variables were actually known, but there it is.......fun thread, Farmerchick! ;)

ETA: Finally read a little of the thread and noted "sucking chest wound".....answer is still the same~cop and Fertile Myrtle get to live, everyone else will be food for something/someone else! :D

I hope EVERYONE that attends my funeral get the belly busting laughs. I won't even care if they are laughing at me instead of with me!

My great uncle left money for his wake. He wanted the keg behind the casket and said his casket should not go in the ground unless there were drink rings on the top!

I need to know the gender of the prisoner and the drug addict. I am surprised so many people threw the drug addict under the bus, any a SHTF scenario there would not be any more drugs so after detox they could be fine.

Not all drug addicts turn out bad after detox, and you want some one old enough to tend the kids and young enough to reproduce and do hard work.

I agree with the others that said the decision would be without real analysis, mostly we would try to save the kid because it is instinct. You try to save the ones who look most like they will survive the injury, not necessarily the outside world......

Naaa...addictive personalities usually just find something else to be addicted to. Sure they can change. Many do. But the potential for relapse is way too high.

Many former drug addicts are now addicted to online forums...
