You people are funny!
I agree. This is the only group I know of who could find humor in deciding who lives or dies.:D

dacjohns, I don't eat chips, so I'm adding a roll of plastic wrap to my first aid kit. :gig

Seriously, I honestly don't know what I would do. It's one of those decisions you can't really make until faced with it. I do know that this is a worthwhile exercise because it makes us think about our values. We may never face this situation, but another situation requiring equally difficult decisions may remind us of the values we thought about here. When your adrenalin is pumping and you have to make split second decisions you wouldn't have time to evaluate much.

18 year old drug addict-Waste of time, has already proven to make bad decisions. Lose him.

65 yo doctor with heart disease-Might need him later, But if I'm working the triage, I'm probably and adequate substitute. He's 65 and his education and skills are most likely outdated. Lose him.

5 yo girl beautiful and otherwise healthy-Liability. Lose her.

30 yo prisoner (white collar)-Sperm donor?Any useful skills?IQ?

26 yo obese housewife (4 kids)-She'll drop the weight fast, probably knows how to do/fix everything. If she's lost her family already-She won't be phased by anything. This chic will be tough as nails. She's still young and fertile, Could re-populate later.

40 yo police officer (father, husband)Dependent on overall physical condition and personality/attitude-Probably thinks he knows everything and will have control issues.

So I'm keeping the fat lady, but need more info before I can choose between the crook and the cop.

I really hate to say this as it is a HUGE character flaw.

I probably would just panic and run in circles pulling my hair. I find I depend alot on others to make tough decisions. I'm the one the others term as "sheeples". :( The only exception to this is when my daughter was first dx with cancer. what I termed "mom mod" kicked on and I didn't cry or freak. I turned totally business and made treatment decisions and plans. But I think that happens when you're (I'm) invested in the person.

In this senerio, I'm not invested, so I think I would be no help at all. I'd probably look for someone else to help me.
You would probably grab the one that reminded you of a loved one. It would be a gut reaction to protect that one.

If all of them had an apparently equal chance of surviving the immediate crisis the next step is looking at - are they likely to survive in the outside world afterward the treatment was done.

Rescuing people from a bad wreck:
I would probably save the Mom so she could be there for her family. The Doc is probably retiring soon and I'm not a big fan of pharmaceuticals anyway so he's gone. If he was a naturopath- I'd save him first.
Then I'd save the little girl or the 18 year old. I had a cousin that had a was an addict in her teens but quit and turned out great later.

If it was a SHTF situation-
I'd save the little girl and adopt her.
I'd save the Doc too and take the cops weapons for defending my self and loved ones.

We're doing a pretty good job of analyzing from the comfort of our homes with the luxury of time.

This is a disaster triage situation where the patients are in immediate need. We're talking seconds, not minutes to make the decisions.

Little girl because pretty little girls tug the emotions.
Mother with kids for pretty much the same reason.

Our basic culture says women and children.

Your right, however, everyone seems to assume the 18 y/o is male, simply because they are a drug user, but gender was never specified.
