Very interesting--thanks! I don't believe all industry is evil and manipulating. And I've personally used some excellent lotions.

As for water, that's part of what makes the difference between lotion and a balm. No water, then you have balm. It's not like a conspiracy theory to keep drying you out. I personally really like my lotions for winter and other drying times/activities.
Me too! I could not survive the winter without my lotion! I use the Vaseline Intensive Care in the white bottle with blue lid (intensive therapy or something?). Most times I use the Walmart version to save money though.

It's not scented and not greasy (can't stand greasy hands!!!). I'll use it several times a day and in just a couple days my hands are totally soft and smooth again! I get horrible cracks and splits because I wash my hands so much (especially when milking, bottle feeding, etc). Even if I drank 8 gallons of water a day it would not help! My dad has psoriasis and I have a feeling my skin has some of those characteristics.

I don't normally use a face lotion, but I will use Oil of Olay (regular kind) sometimes.

That's what I used to use also--although the generic version. It was the only thing my mom and I found to get on top of cracked bleeding hands during a WI winter.

My work involves so many drying activities--working in dirt and woodchips, basket weaving, soap making--I doubt I could keep my hands in good shape without something. These days I use my own beeswax body balm... Or handmade lotion with beeswax, oils and aloe vera juice.

Would yo mind sharing this recipe? I like th fact that it has aloe vera juice in it, and I am almost out of my other homemade moisturizer.

If you do use cleansers (and cosmetics), be sure to stay away from the Dirty Dozen chemicals. Some aren't harmful in themselves, but react in a way that creates something toxic.

After 40 years of trying EVERYTHING on the market and not on the market, including recently tea tree oil and coconut oil, I give up. My face breaks out no matter what. When I go without, it is fine...so do we really need it? I mean as a woman, should I really worry about my face drying up into a raisin if I'm on a clean diet?

(I have naturally oily, yet very sensitive skin.)
Just eat good fats and call it good!
Tea tree oil WILL dry you out and cause issues if used all the time, by the way ;)
My son uses tea tree oil on his face for acne. he also uses benzoyl peroxide on occassion. His face has cleared up considerably since starting to use the TTO. Before useing tea tree oil, he just used the BP, and his skin was worse. :hu

Tea trea is wonderfull for acne and "drying things up" but not good for moisturizing lol. personally i wach daily with fresh water and my hands
i moisturize once a day with a very tiny amount of olive oil and only on my cheeks and above my eyebrows (i get dry and itchy there due to exema).

then about once a week i do a light rub (hands only) with an apricot kernal facal scrub as i dont exfoliate well "on my own" then i apply greek yogurht mixed with organic honey as a light mask, let it sit for 10 mins and rinse well, and i follow up with a tiny amount of olive oil on any dry spots.

honestly though, if products on your face either dry you out or make you break out...dont use them lol.

taking fish or flax seed oil if you dont get alot of healthy oils naturally will also help with dryness, but make sure its good quality

I just got out of a 12 year career in the cosmetics industry and I thought you guys might want the real scoop...
Yes, it is mostly about sales and marketing. That said, there are some really good products out there that I have seen help women with specific issues (i.e. alpha hydroxy products, retin a products, etc...) It wouldn't occur to most women to look for or make an alternative to what is being marketed because they don't think along those lines. They just want to fix what is bothering them about what they see in the mirror.
i'm just now reading this - thanks for the input!

for years i used estee lauder products and i admit it - i LOVED them all. and i also really loved the Lush products - so much so that i drove up to canada to get them when i couldnt easily find them in the States. it was a vice and i dont even care. whoot! skin care!!!!

but now i'd rather spend my $$ on feed and farm projects so i just use Aveeno - the daily moisturizing lotion for everything. i actually use a lot of lotion as i have dry skin and all y'all know how much pork fat and cream i eat. i tried olive oil for a while and it just didnt work out for me -- the cats were way to interested in why i smelled like the frying pan.

Thanks everyone!

I feel better knowing that I don't have to moisturize my face, and I won't look 80. I can't use any make up either b/c my face revolts. Nothing works. I guess it has been trying to tell me something all these years, "Sally, hon, we got it under control, you don't need that stuff."

I used the tea tree oil for the blemishes and then moisturized with coconut oil. Blemishes kept a coming. If I don't put anything on my face it is as clear as day. I do eat lots of healthy fats ie coconut oil/butter, grass fed butter, eggs and meats etc. Tons of veggies, raw and steamed. No grains, legumes, gluten, soy or anything from a box.

My mother has used olive oil for years and years. She looks great for 81, but everything she touched (steering wheels etc.) got sticky. :p

I am going to try the aloe though...thanks for that idea!

One other issue I have with my complexion is that I get a bright red face every single time I workout. AND it lasts forever! :/ It can be embarrasing. "Ma'am, are you alright?!!!"

Apricot kernel oil has a small molecular structure, close to sebum and is readily absorbed into the skin. Olive oil has a larger molecular makeup and it sits on top of the skin making a barrier. They are both useful but for different purposes.

Just thought I would throw that out there.
Thank you! Where do you get it?

Jojoba is the same way...similar to natural sebum. You can get both of them at oilsbynature.com
