I learned today, that our neighbor Ramey Smith ( google him :) ) trains in winter for the great race, by actually letting his dogs run ahead of him, not attached to the sled, while he runs and pushes the sled.
Talk about hard core!

luv it!!! Calvin has always been my hero.

BBrooks, I wish someone could photoshop Barred Rocks into that picture with the dog team in place of the dogs. Long story...but it would just be cool.
That is my favorite all time C&H cartoon! I used to have a long wait for the bus in HS (boring story) and one winter I noticed that it was "that" cold. The cartoon came out after and just struck me as hysterically true! (Yes, I'm that old.....) Calvin reminds me of my brother.

Bubbling, when we went to a friend's wedding Fairbanks one of the best things was visiting musher Mary Shields and meeting her dogs. It was summer, but it was still neat! She was the first woman to finish the Iditarod. Our friends wedding was held in the Fairbanks Mushers Hall.
Were you able to take a summer ride?
Summer carts are a popular tourist attraction.
No, unfortunately not. We were with a largish group and it was the day before the wedding. A good friend of the couple worked with Mary and got us in to see her at the very last minute. It was Mary who taught me about why cabbages grow so huge up there despite the short summer. We got to cast votes on how big her largest would get. There was no winner because a moose broke down her fence or something and decimated her garden that year.

We were in Alaska on vacation last summer - awesome place! We did take the cart rides with the Iditarod dogs, and we went to Hatcher Pass. Quite and experience! I couldn't get over the long days. But I expect the long nights in the winter can be quite depressing.
