I'm thinking they may be some sort of Bosc pear, based on the skin texture and coloring. The neighbor who gave them to us claimed they need 2-3 weeks to ripen, sitting on the counter, not to use the paper bag method. I'm still scratching my head - I used to work in a grocery store produce dept and don't remember any advice like that, even with the local fruit we sold. Like SD said, paper bag in a cool dry place undisturbed always did the trick in few days.
I think the carrot cake jam posted around here somewhere had pears as a big component, I'll go look in my stack of recipe printouts to see if I saved it.
