For the longest time I've thought how cool it would be to have my own little shop, I live in a tiny little town, pop. 200 or less. So I'm not exactly sure how well a little artsy crafty store will go over.
There is an empty building in town, I asked the owner about it yesterday. I just need to think clearly and not be stupid about it.
That's quite a shock, but life may have thrust a great opportunity on you. You might make a go of a little shop of you combine it with internet sales. Whatever you do, with your great attitude, you should land on your feet. I wish you the very best.

I have to keep the chin up - no use comes of being unhappy and depressed about something I have no control over, I do have control over who I am and what kind of person I am and the things I do - and I'll do things that keep making me smile! :D
Great attitude! Here's to things that make you smile!
I have to say, ofg's job story always makes me jealous!

Sorry to hear about your income stream.... but we all know there are worse things in life.... I agree with what the others stated - at least you are proactively taking care of life. :hugs

Wildsky -- I love your idea. I think you are wise to go slow and think it through. If you decide you want to go that direction, I would suggest you keep the items you sell very practical -- things that people will buy even in a down economy. And I agree with kcsunshine that also using the internet to your advantage is a good idea. :)

OFG -- Enjoyed that blog post, as I do most of your blog posts. :D It makes me wonder how many people are consciously unhappy at their jobs, and how many just don't realize they are unhappy with their work/spend lifestyles? :hu I personally have always chosen to work minimally . . . enough to be comfortable, but not much more. I prefer time over money, but inevitably we all need some money at the end of the day.

I also worked only the minimum. I was working 20 hours a week, just a little extra $$$ for cable TV, phone, skype (to call my family in South Africa) Netflix... stuff like that.

I wonder what I will need to do to earn that little bit extra for myself? I might be able to do someting just at home and not bother with a real store as such where I would need to put in more hours than those 20!

I think you will figure something out. The less overhead you have (like a store-front) the easier it is to make a profit on whatever you choose to do. You could teach things you know to others, you could do odd-jobs you enjoy for people who don't have time and want to hire someone, you could sell something at a farmer's market (or similar venue). I think you have a lot of options. Just make sure it is something you love to do. :)

I think you should think LONG and HARD about an internet store of some type. The overhead is low and with some time to devote you could do well.

I would certainly think about going smaller... doing things from home and having a website has a LOT less overhead than maintaining a storefront...

Congrats on the layoff, I've only gotten laid off once and it was the best thing that ever happened to me :)

Good luck with whatever you decide to work on.

I think we're going to qualify for food stamps, or whatever the program is called these days. That'll be a help - and the state also has a program to help with Utility bills, I might make up my paycheck just with all the programs that are out there!

I have to wait till next week to file unemployment and then will know how much I'll get - then I can figure out all the rest of it.

That gives me some breathing room!
