This is a very timely post for me.
We are just starting with a flee infestation. Our old ornery cat had fleas, when he needed to get some surgery. Consequently he needed antibiotics. I am the one who gets to give him those as SO is too much of a whuz to antagonize the cat!! Well we didn't want to traumatize the cat by giving him the flea stuff too, which he hates.
He didn't let me near him for over a month and SO wouldn't put it on him, so consequently, we have fleas in the house. My little Petey ended up getting them and the flea stuff hasn't helped. I think it is time to salt the furniture...

Can you use salt outside if your dogs stay in a kennel for part of the day? And what happens with soapy water and light?

The fleas are attracted to the only light source in the room and jump towards the lamp...and land in the soapy water and drown. I've seen this work so well that you find a black layer of fleas in all stages of growth on and in the water! As the nights go along, the fleas show up less and less and finally not at all. Just have to keep doing it now and again to get any that hatch later.

If you use the salt outside it will kill the earth where it falls. NOTHING will grow for many many years. :(

In Bible times they used to kill the enemy, all his animals and salt the earth in the fields! Pretty complete destruction!

I would use cedar chips and cedar oil in the dog kennel as well as the DE. The oil in the cedar chips will kill fleas and the scent is supposed to keep them hopping mad. (pun intended! :p) For a long term benefit I would also plant penny royal around the dog kennel if you can grow it in your area.

Thanks! Their kennel has no grass on the inside, just lots of trees for shade. I will get some cedar chips and oil tomorrow..I have kept the fleas pretty low this year but I dont want them to get too out of hand with this hot weather!

We use the light and pan of soapy water here too. We've had a couple of tough years with fleas in a row after years of no problems whatsoever. I have never heard of the salt trick before and I'm excited to try that! I worry that my dogs will be walking around licking the floors constantly though.

The salt quickly works its way down into the carpet fiber. It is almost unnoticeable. I don't think the dogs would lick it long and if they did at least it is not toxic. :)

Very true. I'd much rather give it a shot than resort to poisoning them! I wouldn't have to move the rabbit out.... I wouldn't be risking all of our health. I'm sure if the dogs licked enough it wouldn't be healthy for them but it's worth trying it in at least a smaller area to see what they do. Anything to get rid of parasites more naturally!

I've got the flea issue here too. I feel your pain. My house dogs both react to the liquid drops you put down their neck/back, so I have to find gentle alternatives.

I thought about putting the DE directly into the carpet.
I used salt on the carpet. Just got a box of the cheap stuff and scattered it -Everywhere- . Corner to corner on carpets. tile, any fabric coverings, that couldn't be removed. It feels crunchy but doesn't get into my eyes :hit, sinuses and lungs. Vacuum it up in a day or two. The salt dehydrates their bodies.

Mow the yard short if you can, then use DE. Reapply if it rains while the fleas are still around much.

also blue DAWN dish soap to bathe the dogs...use to work in a vets office and man oh man...does that work for FLEAS...and do u know when u take your dog in for mites in there ears, whats used?

FRONTLINE...one spray into the ears, with a cotton ball, clean it out gets rid of mites...and they charge you alot for that...
