Local chain grocery store had an expensive brand/variety of butter ($6.99) on sale at $1.99. "Sell by" is 3/1. I bought 8. Into the freezer

The discussion around here is ... yes, this sale may be a good deal, but will we really use it or need it.True. There are many who do not have income for these increases. Some who adjust what & how much they buy to afford things like soap & TP.
Some won't supplement with a garden. Others don't because of restrictions -- location &/or health, ability -- even area of country where they live. It can be a choice or uncontrollable circumstances.
No matter why we watch prices, I find it interesting to watch trends & causes. For me, I've seen the total adjustment of income & pricing run the gamut. I've been in the work force 60+ years.

Good discussion @FarmerJamie . I check supplies before a buy. Plus only me, so if something I like but very rarely eat, I don't grow it & if buy it's only a meal or two. I don't buy simply because "good deal". The butter you got, yep I'd have jumped on it!!

yes! we use a lot of butter here (Mom switched to baking all her cookies with it after getting fed up with all the water they were putting in margarine). it's not unusual for us to have 4-8lbs in the fridge. we don't bother to freeze it.

FB buys butter in bulk, I guess from sam's club. We use a lot of butter, It has just two ingredients. She wouldn't buy "butter" if it has any additional ingredients.

Never been to a Sam's Club. Never have lived anywhere near one.

Sam's club is big around here. I've never been to a costco. Just the opposite I suppose.

We have Sam's, Costco, and BJ's Wholesale in the area. Sam's has the cheapest price on salt for the home water system.
The hardest thing is to compare prices as the packaging is different across companies. Some may have different counts or sizes in the bulk item. With just the two of us, any savings by doing the analysis doesn't save us much. When I was raising 3 kids with the ex, it made a big savings result.
