I have vacuum packed brown rice- I asked an expert about this and she said that it would keep in the pantry this way.
I hope that was correct as I have a lot of it.

Welcome!

I have also picked up a few things from Emergencyessentials.com I use there gamma seal lids and buckets for bulk storage. This makes using it as we need much easier so food rotation is good.

I hear brown rice in freese is bes, white for storage.

Good luck on the canning, start with the easy stuff and a water bath. Then move towards the pressure canner. Gives you a bit mor expierence underyour belt.

Have fun and enjoy. G

Dumb questions and I have not read this whole thread so I hope it has not already been addressed.
My local donut shop sells food grade 5 gal buckets with lids, I assume they would be appropriate to store my own flour and such in correct? Anything I should be aware of if this is my plan?

That's great that you found a source for buckets. Many have talked about getting them from schools, groceries etc... But I have not been so lucky. I think two things to think about are oxygen absorbers and storage location. Other than that bmaybe some more expierenced SS members may have some tips. g

Those buckets are great and its good that you found a place willing to sell them to you. Not everyone has been so lucky. I don't know what they charge but online they are around 5.00 a piece and then a couple of bucks for the lids.
Just make sure they are clean and the lids fit well before you use them and you will be good to go.

Look on craigslist for free buckets. My friend works at a place that puts buckets out on the curb for the taking. They have so many for free they end up throwing them away. There may be a similar situation near you. Check any food manufacturing plant. They don't all list them, just set them out.

A buck fifty is a great price for storage. Isn't it funny how you can have something right in front of your face and don't realize it.
There is alot you can store in those buckets too besides people food, pet food, chicken feed, bulbs and soil for when you dig up bulbs and need to store them.I have used them to throw in stuff left in the end of bags of soil, peat moss and all that stuff from various gardening projects. If you make your own powdered laundry soap these are ideal for storage. Exactly what you would want.
I have heard that some people even use them for
worm farms.;)

Fast food places almost always have them. You just have to get there at the right time. Over the course of about 2 weeks I collected 8 from 2 different restaurants. Now that was 25 years ago and I used them when I went on 3-4 day canoe trips. We used them to keep everything dry just in case the creek dumped us; and it did - more than once. Never had wet clothes or sleeping bag or anything else. They really do seal air and water tight.
