Yikes. Y'all aren't very comforting, ya know!

Cattle prod it is, then. The big one at TSC. Pork just went up another few cents a pound....

I've worked with pigs before and they weren't that scary. :idunno They're VERY trainable, so if you start young and teach them the rules, they're generally ok.

BUT, I will say I was in 4-H many years ago with a kid who had to fight the hogs off his grandfather after his grandfather had a heart attack in the pen and hit his head and started bleeding. Luckily the grandfather was ok, but the boy had to fight them off until he could get help. :(

I would definitely get that prod, but do yourself a favor and make a special sound anytime you zap a pig. Something easy like a hiss or a squeal. Then EVERY TIME you zap make the noise. I have used this with horses or other dangerous animals. If you condition them in this way and ever get trapped without the zapper it may save your life by giving them some reason to back up.

In the past a horse trainer I have always done a version of this. Anytime I needed a spur or crop it was associated with a sound. Of course training the horses I was trying to get completely away from needing the training aid.

Later when talking to another trainer he had a breeding stallion that had savaged several people. He used the zapper and the noise for safety. I also have another friend who used the method on their dairy bull.

The thing I like about the method is that it can be as mild or extreme as you need depending on the situation and the danger level involved.

Just talked to the farmer next door while walking my dog. He tossed a couple of pumpkins over the fence a couple days ago (I was wondering who did that....wanted to thank them and encourage that behavior! He did it based on a previous conversation about me gleaning his fields again this year.) He is starting to sell cornstalks for fall decorating and has to strip off the cobs first, otherwise racoons come in at night and destroy his displays. He offered to toss the corn by the bucketful over my fence into my pig's pasture!!! And any pumpkins, squash, etc. that starts going bad while on display. This is in addition to my gleaning his fields before he plows them under, which is still probably a couple of weeks away.

Free pig food! Woohoo! I am seriously hoping this will be enough to eliminate feeding them, for a while anyways.

He also is not selling as many raspberries as he'd hoped, and offered me the opportunity to pick for free. Gotta re-arrange today's tasks and get over there!
