Yep, they're omnivores. Really, they like meat. They're not just rooting for fun...they're looking for easy meat in the form of bugs, worms and grubs. And sure they also like turkey/other birds, pork (each other), any animal flesh...in the right circumstances even humans too.

That's why old timers will tell you not to go into a hog pen or pasture alone - in case you might fall and be injured. In those circumstances with larger hogs, you could become......lunch! :)

A bit of good serious advice.....NEVER feed them from your hand. All food should be dropped on the ground or into a feed bin. Pigs have poor eyesight. It would be very easy, especially when they're older, to accidently bite your hand and take fingers off. But you see, as omnivores, your digits will taste just fine to them.....so, they're not going to spit those fingers out to be sewn back on.

hee hee hee - GREAT advice, Kim, and ick. hadnt thought of it that way. blech!

and yep to second, third 'what they said'... Bourbon Red had some pigs that would eat his chickens! i think the old timers say that they will eat anything they smell.

thats why i hate it when folks say that pigs are "just like dogs." i tell them the difference is that if i fall down in the yard my dogs will come over and lay by me until my hubby shows up. if he cant find me he'll ask them "where's momma" and they will take him to me.

if i fall down in the pig yard? they will eat me. yikes!

i'd keep them poodles away from the pigs, if you know what i mean
:)

You gals are baaaaaad! My poor poodley-doodley's!!! They don't go near the pigs...it is across the goat pasture, and Mya has a strict policy about poodles: Poodles are curly little coyotes and are to be killed.

My mare had the same policy. If I wanted to walk Gunnar on the farm next door, I had to go through her pasture. I would carry Gunnar in one arm and a whip in the other to beat her off. She was normally respectful of my space but lost her mind around dogs after she was briefly pregnant (two weeks, maybe? Long enough to become hormonally deranged....)

I have a client who lost the end of her index finger to a HORSE! He swallowed it. She was giving him a carrot. Sheesh. No comment.

Have you heard the old saying that more people are killed by pigs than sharks? Well guess it IS true! Sharks vs pigs "Alone in the USA and Canada approximately 40 people are killed each year by pigs six times more than by sharks worldwide."

Reminds me of our donkey. He's killed chickens and ducks and eaten them. Needless to say we no longer have him.

I remember several years ago I was in the chicken pen cleaning out a bunch of scrap metal. I accidentally ran into a piece that cut into my shin down to the bone and tore a chunk of meat out. I had to get stitches.
Did the chickens ever come running like it was meal time

I believe that FF, ever seen CSI? There an episode about that. LOL.

You can be really hurt by several farm animals. I have a friend who was a horse trainer. He had a stallion pick him up by the hip and shake him ripping away all of the meat down to the bone socket!!! :ep

At least the stallion wasn't in it for dinner. ;)

I had one horse (briefly...she was amazing to ride, I got her as a project to train and sell) pick up the vet by the shoulder and carry him down the aisle. He was not a small man. He was not a happy man. He was not afraid to express his opinion.
