It is so funny to me that OFG frow gets sick at the thought of birthin' baby goaties and I think it is totally cool to have my hand inside a goat, straightening out the mess in there, but she can help butcher a pig, chickens, turkeys and crack jokes about it.....and the smell of wet bird makes me want to hurl and I couldn't even finish plucking two turkeys. roll
hey baby!!

i know...i know... i'm a enigma, wrapped in a shroud of mystery......

goat birthing just makes me whoozy... i cant hardly even watch the goat.. um.. mating. but butchering. no problem!... who wants to talk butchering?!? whoot! gutting chickens!?!?!

ha!

but turkeys wet or dry do kinda smell bad.... think of it as motivation to get them nasty feathers plucked off as fast as possible!! ha!

tell them pigs i said hi.. heh heh heh.....

BOTH my pigs are developing a jiggle in their walk now..... :drool All this free food! Yeah, baby! All summer I prayed for rain and now that it is raining, I am frustrated beyond belief, waiting for it to clear enough that I can go load up my car.

A client told me that she came back from vacation a couple days ago and had to clear the acorns off her driveway with a snow shovel! They are still sitting in her wheelbarrow, so I will be going to get them this weekend....woohoo! Even if they are too wet to store, they are getting dumped in the pig pasture. The squirrels leave them alone...either that, or the pigs ate the squirrels that attempted to mess with their food...

OH!

We got another goat the other day.. Ehem.

And the lady had a nice big oak tree in the pen of her milkers, she didn't even have the tree fenced off and they hadn't chewed it's bark off at all.. anyone know anything about this? If they don't like it at all, that could be a great idea for providing shade for goats w/o worrying about them killing the tree. They eat all the trees we have, boxelder, cottonwood, buckthorn, elder, etc. etc.

wet bird? dead or alive?
Dead and freshly scalded :) It's a stench that doesn't leave the nostrils for days! We have our big day (135 birds) coming up in about 2-3 weeks. Blech.
Problem SOLVED!

We put a big squirt of citrus dish soap into the scalding water. It covers the bad wet feathers smell, helps the feathers wet more quickly to make scalding faster and actually helps soak some of the dirt off of the skin of the bird! After they are plucked and rinsed they look fine indeed. :thumbsup

I'll take some new pics when the sun comes out again.

I used Dawn in the scalding water, but they still smelled. Citris, huh? Maybe I'll get some Vicks for under my nose, too....

I have maples, oaks, and cherry in my fields and the goats leave the bark alone. They are all mature trees, though, that may be why. They are all neatly trimmed at goat ballet height, though...

It also helps to withhold food (except for fresh greens if you desire) and only give water for 12 to 24 hours before cleaning them. It gives them a chance to "clean out" from the inside. ;)

Hi Monique

I finally got back to my apt, and the book you sent was in my mail box! Thanks. I'll return it as soon as I finish reading it.
Take your time with it, it is not one to rush through. Take weeks or better yet, months.

FF, yep, the free part is great, but what I find really interesting is that those free items are what the pigs prefer. I could never get them to eat that one bag of pig starter that I bought when I first got them. They are spoiled on rotting tomatoes and icky corn!
Yeah, I'm going to have to hang onto it a while, too depressing to try and read a lot at a time. I switch between that book and Erma Bombeck.
