Take care of yourself. No one else can be helped if you're unable to.
Glad you get a fun day and to start vacation a day early! Enjoy!!
Sending up healing thoughts for your family!
Yesterday was our trip into H-town with 21 high school students. OMG... First of all, it's a good thing we gave ourselves an extra hour because it took us almost that long to get parked. We saw the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular and it really was a nice show, but all in all, I would have rather stayed home, lol. Just one real hitch in the whole thing.... we temporarily mis-placed a student... Background: this is our "high-drama" student. She really does have a lot of problems and I feel bad for her - but she tries to create heck and havoc wherever she goes and she managed a little bit of that yesterday.
After the play was over and we were leaving she told one of the other students that she had to go to the rest room. Soooo, the rest of the group proceeds to the lobby where we all stand around waiting for her to finish and re-join the group. And.... she didn't! She said she got turned around and went out of the restroom in the wrong direction so she just followed the crowds to the exit while we were all waiting in the lobby for her. She decided to head for the parking garage and wait for us there while we were having security and some of us chaperones scouring the entire Hobby Center for her. Thirty minutes later she is found outside. She did get a tongue lashing, and also an "I'm glad you're okay" speech too. All's well that ends well - but she will end up with more drama from this than she expected. No longer will she be able to leave the group on her own even to go to the restroom. From now on she will be accompanied by a chaperone at all times. It's a shame to have to treat a high school student that way, but you get what you ask for in our group.
Hens are really picking up their production - yippee! My egg customers are really happy about that - it's been a long dry spell while the girls were molting.
I'll be moving around a couple of the goat ladies today. K'ili is a Nubian I bought last summer. She's always been a very lean goat but healthy. She's bred and about half-way through her pregnancy now and she looks waaay too lean for my liking. I'm going to bring her up into the barnyard where I can give her some special attention and she won't have as much competition for feed. I hate to put a bred doe on too much feed, but she needs it.
Other than that, all is status quo for the moment.
Only about 4 hours of work tomorrow and I'll be OFFFFFFF work until January 5, 2015! Really hoping to get a lot of stuff done while I'm off. Only need the weather to cooperate, and the grandkids. I'll be bringing them home with me for a few days after Christmas - but they are nothing but fun! And, if I don't get much outside work done while they're here - who cares?????
I absolutely will - they love to help! They visited on spring break earlier this year and helped plant the garden. Good lessons for them to learn too!
I came home at about noon today and immediately tackled a job I've been needing to do for months. One of my gate posts had broken off and I had "patched" around it with a stock panel. We had pulled out the stub of the post and about a ton of concrete that was around it a while back, but had never finished the job. Today - the job is finished. Hole dug, post planted and everything put back. Yay!!
I've been taking some time every day to work with the mini horses. The only time they really get handled is when the farrier comes. They are such brats and of course, they play follow-the-leader very well. The worst one is a horrible influence on the others. Soooo, with some clicker training two of them are really improving. They come to a whistle and have learned to touch my hand which earns them a click and then a reward. It's working so well that the worst of them is now playing follow the leader (instead of being the baaaad leader).
They live out in the big pasture 99% of the time, but today they were so good that I brought them up into the smaller barnyard which has some nice grass in it. That was a nice built-in reward for being caught. Getting them out was a bit of a challenge, but wasn't horrible at all. I'll continue to work with them the entire time I'm off if the weather allows. They're not the least bit mean, in fact they are very well behaved as soon as they are haltered - but - I want, and expect, them to live up to certain expectations even while free. It just takes time and now I've finally got a little time to spend with them.
Looks like we have the possibility of rain some rain for the next few days. BOOOOO! But, it's not a huge chance so I'm gonna hope for the best.
Well, well, well....I get time off and what happens? RAIN, RAIN, and more RAIN. In fact, we've had so much rain since yesterday that I'm having to put floaties on the chickens so they don't drown! (slight exaggeration, but only slight) UGH!
I'm still trying to get a few things done, but I think I'm going to concentrate on the inside today. So far, been cleaning out the fridge...and may I just say - yuck. It's not even too bad because I cleaned it out a few weeks ago for Thanksgiving, but still - yuck. One of my least favorite chores. And why you might ask? Cuz I hate it when I lose something in there and it ends up being wasted. I hate waste!
Buttttt, one thing that's NOT being wasted is all the goat milk. I've been making cheese for several days now. I mostly make Chevre...in fact, that's all I make, lol. But, I do make different flavors. Besides just plain, we love garlic, and garlic and rosemary. Maybe I'll think about some other flavors, but so far we're happy with what we've got.
Looks like Sparkle is weaning her baby...which means I get to milk her without separating her from her baby now. I'll continue to milk her until I go back to work - then she'll get tossed out into the pasture to dry up and finish out her pregnancy.
DH is out of town tonight, so it'll be snacks, wine and hot tub for me this evening! No big meal to cook, even though I enjoy cooking.
