Hurricane preparedness! Hope it goes somewhere else, but the models show it roaring right up the Texas/Louisiana line. Don't forget the oil for your generator.
Time for me to load up the gas containers for my generator. Been extremely lucky so far but, need to be ready. Gonna start it up this weekend for checkout, etc. Get the cords, etc. all in one spot. Now that DS is out of my garage, I can stash all my things where they used to be. Except gas, never keep it in there, in a separate little shed.
I kinda hope so too.... But, I'm not too worried about it....YET! But, these little 'what if's' are a good opportunity to have a practice run. Timing sucks though...it's just not a good weekend to do all the preps. DH will be gone Friday night and his birthday is Sunday...so I'll have to find some time to do a few things regardless. Stinkin' weather...ugh!
We dodged a bullet! No "tropical system" coming at us - even though we've been dodging tropical moisture for a week now. Wow - crazy lucky that all we've had all week is less than a quarter inch of rain. It rained every single day at work (7 miles from home) and didn't rain at all at the house. I'm thrilled!
I was able to mow the yard yesterday and my wonderful neighbor mowed his part of the pasture. I had tried mowing it a few weeks ago and it was just too much for my mower. I could have done it - but would have taken me hours and hours in low gear. He got out there on his big tractor and mowed it in an hour this afternoon. I have tractor envy right now, lol!
Wormed a few more does today. I'm so tired of all the parasite problems I've had for the last couple years. And, I hate to say it, but my problems started when I got Nubians. They are just big ol wussies! I'm thinking I'm gonna stick with the crosses...like Pygmy x Nubian crosses and Nigi x Nubian crosses. Hybrid vigor is a good thing. Been thinking about a Kiko buck...but I've got enough bucks right now.
I'm gonna have to start making som tough decisions about my herd.
Today is DH's b'day! Woo hoo! We really didn't do anything special even though we kept thinking about it. Just got lazy and stayed home all day. His choice so I didn't argue with him.
Tomorrow starts another work week.... Can I retire yet?
I've thought about a meat type buck just for the issue of sales with the bucklings each Spring. Problem IS --- I want ONLY MALES from that buck and ONLY FEMALES from the Nubian... Hmmmm. I can dream.
My "mini" Nubian buck has outgrown his status as he is now 32" & over 200# -- huge, huge guy. (GREAT milk lines, Green Gables buck). Well, I have one of his sons from this year, 5th gen mini who SEEMS to have gotten all the "mini" genetics his mom had to offer. Trip bucks and he was/is the smallest by 50%. Keeping him & will probably send for reg papers for him in a month or so. Nice guy, sweet & friendly...good color.
Are your Nigis hairy? That is a "don't want" for me. I'm used to the slicker breeds. Plus, the available area for milking with the smaller animals....I could get over that. Plus the milking machine makes it less of an issue but, I like milking one or two for all I need. Then there's the cream ratio thing...decisions!!
Me and my big mouth - I just had to say that we've dodged the rain all week. Had two inches last night... ugh. Puts us over 13 inches in two weeks. Yay! I think I'll start raising fish.
@Mini Horses - my Nigi's are NOT hairy in the least. My buck has a bit of a beard, but his body is slick. I don't remember him getting particularly hairy in the winter months either. The Pygmy bucks on the other hand are hairy beasts, lol. I've had people look at a pygmy buck and say they look like miniature buffalo.
I think, all things considered, that I'd like to stick to the medium size goats with an emphasis on being dual purpose. I did a breeding last year that was a Kinder female (1/2 pygmy and 1/2 Nubian) and bred her to the Nigerian buck. I love, love, love those kids (!) and I kept both. (one male, one female) My wish is that they get to be at least medium sized and not stay dwarf/pygmy size. Also, I want the doeling to have a gorgeous udder (her mother has the best udder on the place), big teats and milk, milk, milk. Not sure what to breed that doeling to just yet. I won't be breeding her for awhile anyway so I can worry about that next year.
Had the day off today. Had to take DH for laser surgery on his eye. Always a stressful day when we do something like that - but it wasn't too stressful to stop for 'linner' on the way home (you know---lunch/dinner = linner) Food was good, but DH was uncomfortable so we didn't linger.
I had done most of the critter feeding this morning, so I didn't have to do much when we got home except to feed the dogs and milk the does this evening. That was nice!
I'll be getting up really early in the morning because I'm taking some of our students to do community service at a local fun run. It's put on by one of our instructors in memory of his lost son so we are happy to be of assistance. I have to be there at 6:30 - run starts at 7:30 and hopefully it's finished by 930. And even more hopefully - it won't get too hot too soon!
We got good news today! We're getting another paycheck for DH's wreck settlement. We got our first check a month or so ago.... started out as a nice fat number with a few nice fat round zeros after it...but by the time we paid attorney fees and paid back all the insurance companies there wasn't a bunch of nice big fat zeros left, lol! But we're getting another payment from our PIP ins and our Under Insured Motorist coverage that doesn't have anything else coming out of it. Woohoo! Now to just decided if we're going to spend any of it or squirrel it away.
I think at the most we might take a little vacation. After all, DH got in this wreck when our previous vacation to Canada was cut short because his mom had a small stroke. We flew home on a Thursday, (we were supposed to be there until Sunday) and went straight to the hospital to see her. The following Saturday morning, going to visit his mom again, was when the accident happened. Soooo, we deserve another vacation!
@Britesea I thought about that for sure...I am a real hoarder when I actually have some money...so we're gonna sit on it for awhile before we decide. Except for the vacation which may not be until next year we haven't really talked about spending it. Funny - because if we were broke we'd want to spend money on everything, lol!
