Tornados- shudder- are you planning to rebuild?

And farmerchick- yes- bears come around about now- nothing like seeing a bear butt going over the fence when you walk out. But much better than not going, I suppose.

There is a rythym here- There are deer everywhere in the spring with their fawns and all- then the mountain lions move back and the deer popultion plunges- I think there are a lot of kills but also the deer move down into the valley. Then the mountains lions move on in August or so and the deer magically reappear and bucks start after the does. Then the blackberries ripen along with huckleberries and the bear follow them up the hill and arrive about now.

Eventually we will rebuild. It has been over a year ago now. The Feb. 5, 2008 tornado that went through Arkansas. We ran out of money and ended up living in a camper until my dad passed May 31,2009 and then I inherited his mobile home and about 1/2 acre. We used to live on 10 acres. At least we still own it. We bought everything to build with and then ended up not having the money for the most important part-the foundation. We planned a concrete block house and metal roofing so at least the blocks and metal can be saved for when we are ready to start again. They said that the tornado that went through stayed on the ground for 2 hours and covered 123 miles and reached it's strongest point as an EF4. It also took out the two largest towns around, Clinton and Mountain View so we were without electricity and water for well over a week and a month after the water was back on it still had to be boiled. The destruction was unbelieveable. Another reason to be prepared!

That is so cool ETR

your area has a seasonal-like legend attached to it....I like that. Kinda makes it very homey and special in a way.

well, bears aren't too homey when they come knocking...but I still think it is neat!

I am going to google my town and see if there is any type of lore around here to learn.

My parents lived in northern california for years before I was born. No electricity or running water. They communicated with neighbors by CB. I remember them telling stories abour bears and big cats. They really loved it there.

I do NOT miss splitting wood. My brother was too uncoordinated to do it and my sister was too young and small, so I got stuck doing it all the time. :p

Since we used to split all our wood by maul or double bit axe, a wood splitter is a novelty indeed! A true luxury! :) I kind of liked splitting cookstove wood, though...easier and you can get into a rhythm. Before you know it, you have a great pile.... :p

Rebecca- I hope you get to re-start your true home soon. It's quite hard to downsize like that.

On the radio last week, a stormchaser was saying how he saw a herd of mini-donkeys get picked up by a tornado- about half of them disappeared. But one landed on the roof of his truck and put a giant dent into it.
Later he was saying that earthquakes in California were much more scary. One of the regulars on the show said that in an earthquake, your cat may run around the room and that's about it. No earthquake every caused anyone to get hit with a flying mini-donkey.

A gross exaggeration maybe about earthquakes but I do find tornados much more scary. How the heck can you prep for something that clears off your house and land and everything on it?

ETR that is just insanity.
donkeys picked up by a tornado. ICKKyyy!!!

I saw a special on a tornado that was video taped. Went straight thru a hog farm. A monster building lost its roof and some walls and such but not one hog as killed. He had like 10,000 on the property. WILD.....The building had those low concrete block sides and that is what saved those hogs...the design of the building.

But a flying donkey...that is just so sad..poor critter. What a way to go! Eww...

Cat running around? Yes, that is quite a gross exaggeration!
