We are building an underground fraidy-hole big just big enough for all five of us and a shelf full of supplies. Water, food(MREs probably) batteries, flashlights, blankets and a change of clothes and power inverter. We have a lot of natural disasters in the last two years. It has been scary. First the tornados, then wild snows, flooding, hailstorms, ice storms and two small 2.5 earthquakes. I AM NOT exagerrating. I have lived out here since I was about eight and I have never seen weather like we have had in the last two years. Seperately yes, but not one right after the other! Other than the snow, six inches if any is our usual max. About two months after the tornado we got over 2 feet! The earthquakes, I don't know what to do about except hope that if our mobile goes that our storm cellar will hold!

A gross exaggeration maybe about earthquakes but I do find tornados much more scary.
i'm with you on that one - i HATE the whole tornado thing back here.. much rather would have the earthquakes. hee hee hee... my cats basically slept thru all the ones i was in when i lived on the 'left coast'... back here the news makes a huge deal about the storms. its too much for me - i'd rather have an EQ come out of no where ...the whole thing with the news guy yelling - RUN IN YOUR BASEMENT TAKE COVER....while the warning is greatly appreciated.... i'm just too much of a nervous nelly for all that drama. i'd rather just have something 'surprise' me then see the storm tracker.

rebecca100 - i love that you call it a fraidy hole
:)

i'm thinking that one of our projects should be a reinforced room in the currently unfinished part of our basement.

we are having The Big Wind today and its reminding me that i need to go and make sure i know where the candles and batteries are....

big wind means good time to dry sheets, comforters...LOL

yea I hear you. An earthquake is unescapable almost. While a tornado has a path...at least one might be lucky to have a tornado not choose that path. An earthquake just nails the whole area.

hee hee hee ok here is the rest of the story.... when 'the big one' hit seattle i had just gotten out of the shower and was standing there naked. conventional wisdom says to run outside where the likelihood of something falling on you is greatly reduced.... but there was NO WAY i was runnin out in the street neked NO WAY! hee hee hee

but that is much better than the last tornado bearing down on us and me trying to calculate if i had time to run out there and chase 40ish scared hens into the hen house... and then trying to collect up a buncha scared cats and trying to get them all in one room. hee hee hee

;-)

is Ohio known for tornados

I always think of that tornado alley in KS and such. NC is seeing more tornados, granted small ones, but surprising they are touching down more it seems over the years.

yea, that is how we get killed. we "think" we have time. we have got to remember #1 is life.....a chicken or a flying blanket that needs to come off the line just isn't worth it.

and yea, I wouldn't be running out to a ditch outside if I was nekked!
LOL

(being SS means you have an old T shirt and shorts or sweats RIGHT in the bathroom if you are in tornado area..HA HA)--watch how fast I could jump into that and run..LOL

I ahve never experienced a real earthquake and really don't want to. we are close to the New Madrid fault line. LOL The tornados are enough for me. The bad thing is that every time the bad weather hits it is always winter !
Oh and sometimes not putting the animals up is better than putting them in a barn. Just ask my banty roo that rode through it all in the rafters of the barn and ended up in the house. When we picked up the rafters and tin the next day and he ran out unhurt, but scared out of his mind and squacking!

... unless you have multiples! In 1974 there were 148 tornadoes in a 24 hour period! Super_Outbreak Hard getting away from that!

Ohio definitely gets tornadoes. I lived there as a little girl and remember seeing piles of stuff that used to be neighborhoods.
