:celebrate Grow little oatmeal plants, grow!
This is great! I bought some to try this year - so I am going to be following your progress Baymule!
I have also been curious about how to turn the 'kernels' into 'flakes' after they're grown :hu I found a pasta roller machine for cheap (just had the roller, no attachments) and plan to try cooking them a bit, then running them through that. I think I may end up with flattened oatmeal goop though :p Do you plan to eat them as a whole grain?

I bought a Family Grain Mill from www.everythingkitchens.com and I got the flaker attachment for it too. So if my little oats grow up to be big oats, then I will flatten the little suckers and make oatmeal.......or a mess!

I'll admit to looking at the flaked oats in TSC and wondering if you could use them for oatmeal. After all, they were waaaaaay cheaper per pound than it is to buy oatmeal in the store.

Where did you get your seed from? I have them on my list to get from bountiful garden but they are for bunnies and chickens.
I got them from Bountiful Gardens. They are not just for bunnies and chickens, you can eat them too!
If it's sold as seed, it's not food safe. Unless it's organic. If it's sold as grain, you can eat it or sow it.

I took a picture yesterday of the oat patch. They have really grown and should be blooming/setting seed soon. The oats on the side of the road that TX-DOT planted last year (and grew, reseeded and came back up this year) have green oats on them, so mine can't be far behind.

Looks nice! I was thinking of this the other day and wondering where I could try it! Maybe next year between my rows of spears. That way, hopefully they'd be done B4 the spears were ready.
