You have to know the people or the place to counter-offer! I have lost some very nice deals because people were insulted by counter offers. It is not good to point out minor flaws as this can trip this reaction. Maybe I am a easy mark but I rarely counter offer on a deal that I really want. In hind sight I realize that the OPer had some doubts on the deal or she wouldn't have posted here, so the suggestion to conter was indeed valid. I used to deal in gem stones as a hobby which is pretty much a dicker market. I found that usually the really serious folks know what they want for a item. When selling avoid the "pawn star" [tv on History channel] bidder who starts at half of what he knows he can get reselling the item. He knows the seller wants to sell because they BROUGHT the item to his store and often they need money. any money for other needs. so he has all the advantage.

Points well taken gd.
I had already mentioned to this woman that I didn't need a canner, and hers is only a water bath canner (mine is a pressure canner), plus she mentioned that the rack is rusty (anybody know if I should do anything about that??), so I used that as my bargaining chip and told her that I didn't need the canner, and would she take 80. She replied that she would take 85 and give me the canner.

Negotiating is an art, for sure. If a good buyer knows what they will pay, then there isn't usually much need for negotiation, and they'll usually offer a fair price to the seller. Sometimes negotiating for the fun of it is a good thing too :)

You could buy a new rack if that one won't clean up. I use my boil bath canner to sterilize and keep my jars hot before canning.

My Mom has a rusty rack as well, just in the joins though. I used it once last summer at her place and the water did get a tad rusty coloured after a couple of batches of peaches, so I just kept changing the water and everything worked fine. :hu

But you can definitely just buy a new rack and go forward from there :) It's definitely handy to have two canners some days!
