I object to paying out to foreign countries first before taking care of our own. Everyone is entitled to their own causes and use of their money. I choose to take action closer to home.

Thanks everyone for your replies .Seems like Samaritan's Purse is getting good , ahhhh..reviews..? :) I like that they are open with their affairs. They take under 10% to administer aid, which i feel is reasonable and needed.
The intent of this thread was to get the info you folks supplied, which i did. I had never heard of Samaritan's Purse until this thread, i'm donating to them. The Red Cross does great things, and i've donated to them and the Salvation Army many times.
I want most of my hard earned donation to help the Japanese people who are suffering now and need us.Thank you for helping me to decide and get my money where it will do the most good..!

I have been racking my brain since I read your first post yesterday...I can not for the life of me remember the name of the organization that puts together thousands of food packets (rice, beans, etc) for humanitarism. Practically all the donations are for food, labor is all volunteers, hardly any paid staff at all....

still thinking..... Maybe someone will remember? This is an organization that any church or group of people can call them and set up the time and place to work on packaging, all across the nation. For some reason, I thought they were out of Newton, Ks, but I couldn't find a thing.

Helping your community is great, and I agree, more should do that. But I would hope that if a disaster like that hit in my back yard, someone would offer me food, drinking water and basic shelter. I think it's great that so many countries are willing to help those in dire need. People can't survive drinking contaminated water and not eating.

Marianne, sounds like a great organization, let us know when you remember their name..
Sure, we have folks right here in America that need help as well.I helped with a donation when Katrina trashed New Orleans.
I don't have lots of money to donate, but 10 -20 bucks can do alot of good when handled properly.I think some of these relief organizations get to big and start to lose some or even alot of their effectivness...
To me, it doesn't have to be us or them,i can help a little here and in Japan, or whereever..

Are you talking about the Mennonite Relief?

This is driving me nuts. I don't remember it being the Mennonites or any church related group. It was just 4 or 5 letters long, an anagram, and the anagram reminded me of another organization.

I have been googling everything thing I can remember and still have nothing! So sorry.

Mennonite Relief has helped many, many people in need. I'm like you, I'd rather that most of my donation went to actual food or water instead of salaries, and that would be another good place for your donation.

The name will pop into your head when you least expect it, Marianne...lol It's just good to know that there are some smaller, less known organizations out there helping.I just wanted to know how my donation could best help.

Wow, it is good to know there are so many good groups out there. I know for myself that I am going to donate to Catholic Relief Services. I know that they only use 3% for Admin. fees the rest goes to food, water, and clothing. They also stay with the cause as long as they are needed. They are still working with Katrina and Haiti.
