WOW what a great response and a good conversation. I know you are pleased with that situation. Sounds like a good principal.
Sounds like the situation will be reviewed on how to discipline and how much from taking time from recess.

Cool....

Thanks, I feel good about how I handled it and how she responded. I've worked as a substitute teacher and a paraprofessional for over 10 years. I've seen a lot of unreasonable parents who just don't get why things are done the way the are done. And I've also seen some adminstrators who weren't the best at dealing with them. I definitely have no intention of ending up being in a situatin like that as much as I might have spouted off before. Now that the facts of the matter are more or less clear I think it will all work out. I'll have to find some other windmill to tilt at this time....

You are right, a whole recess is not the way to do it...not for just being silly. When I used to have them I would often get them to run laps...funny thing is...in gr 1 they thought it was a game and they would all join in...made for a much quieter classroom afterward:>) No more sillies haha
Glad things worked out with the principal. And I'm glad you've dome enough lunch hours to be level headed about it :)

:D Now that I can believe! I worked with one first grader years ago. If he got antsy in class I'd take him to the big lobby and have him run. He loved it and went back to class ready to work most of the time. Everyone was happier.
The year before that everyday was 7th and 8th grade lunch duty, followed by my half hour lunch break, then 1-3 grade lunch duty. Yikes! Almost everyday one of the Jr. High kids did something that required me to go to the office and talk to an administrator. This caused me to lose 10 minutes or so of my lunch time almost everyday. We complained about that but it never changed.

I am so happy with your outcome of the lunchroom ordeal. Our elementary shcool had totally unreasonable expectations of kids during a certain principals rein. They were not allowed to talk at all. Nothing above a whisper. Kids have to sit all day and be quite, why cant they talk with their friends during lunch? I agree it gets really noisy, but what is it hurting? Dont you like to sit with a friend during lunch and talk? I am so glad it left when that principal did. You just have to give kids an outlet somewhere. and only a few minutes of play a day just doesnt cut it.

In one school I worked in they switched things so that grades 1-3 have recess first, then lunch. It works great! They built in 10 minutes in between for them to get their lunches from the classroom, put away their coats and wash their hands. In the other school it's the 4th-6th graders who have recess first and their lunch is usually a little quiter than the younger kids. Don't know if there's a connection or not.

Talked to his teacher this morning when I dropped him off. She confirmed that my son did try to tell the woman on duty why he moved back but she cut him off saying basically, "I don't want to hear it." His teacher agreed that an entire recess on the wall was unreasonable. If his teacher hadn't had recess duty that day that's where he would have been. She also told me that this woman is new to the school. Hopefully this was a learning experience for her.

If any of you have seen the news story about the 3rd grader from CT who accidently shot himself Sunday at a gun show, that is one of the schools where I work. I had the boy who died in class last week and his older brother as well. Didn't know them well at all but this is just so hard to take. The media is all over the father for giving his son permission to use the gun (don't want to debate how anyone feels about this. We all have our opinions I'm sure.) Right now I'm grieving for the community I work in who knew this boy and his family much better than I did.

Thanks. This was hard for the school community especially. Our very well liked (by most) superintendent resigned two weeks ago fairly suddenly. Paul Newman had his one of his Hole in the Wall Gang Camps in this town so they took his loss rather hard. And now this unspeakable tragedy. And nationwide media attention over this. :(

Didn't called to sub yet again. I'll be spending the weekend getting together packets to mail out to our school district and another just south of here. I know both need subs.
Went to the small awards assembly at my son's school for their behavior program. He didn't win one this time but it was still nice to be there with him applauding his classmates.
Came home and put fresh straw in the duck and chicken houses and the quails indoor cage. They're all having a blast scratching around in it.
I've been playing with my new camera and should have some new pictures of the yard etc. soon to put up.
Talked with a couple of people on the phone about some church business. Not very exciting but nice to talk to people!
Got some dinner started.
Should have gotten outside more since the sun is shining but I'm still fighting this cold. So I'm relaxing here and there. I just happen to be doing it in front of my computer!
Should also spend some time figuring out what I want to be when I grow up and how I'm going to get there. I'm just spinning my wheels here and I need to not be doing that......
