Woohoo! Usually we have a long weekend after the first week, but Labor Day is so late this year that we've only got the usual two. Weather is going to stink too. Oh well. Lots to be done inside as well.
hahahaha I thought I would have all this time and energy to get caught up this weekend. Pffft! I'm exhausted. I'm thrilled that school has started, believe me, but I forgot how tired working makes you!
It's raining like mad out there with Danny passing to the East of us. Lots to do inside. The puppy had us up at 4am. I couldn't figure out why since he hasn't done that in months. DH finally admitted that he probably hadn't given Indy enough time to poop on his last trip out before bed. Grrrrrr! I got up and took him out. Then when he woke up up again at 6am I made DH get up with the older dog, Kobi. Then I fell back to sleep and no one woke me up until 9:30! Gah!!!
DH was supposed to be out on the CT River at the annual HoverIn with his students but the weather put an end to that. They always end up soaking wet anyway and we aren't getting any wind from storm Danny but they decided against going. Just as well since DH would have had to leave early to go play with his band and the Blues Band competition in West Hartford this afternoon. I'll post links! Not sure if DS and I are tagging along. They only play for 20 minutes. We'll be in the car longer than we would at the VFW where it's being held. It will be loud and we won't be able to hang around outside with this rain. I think we'll pass and I'll bake. Our temps are in the low 60s. It will warm up some tomorrow so I should probably get some bread done and maybe some muffins to freeze too. My hens are laying better than they were and I have quite a few eggs. Sales at church have fallen off some. Don't know why. I may be posting at school to see if I've got any takers there. I had one secretary last year who would flag me down for a dozen or two every other week. But I'm not in that school anymore though. Need to get the word out!
It just occurred to me that this is the first year in about 7 that I was working full time at the very beginning of the school year! Good feeling. For several years I fell into a one year position that became available after the year started. Last year I didn't find anything for quite a while and was subbing. Then I saw the posting for the speech therapy assistant position. Perfect! That's what my degree is in. On paper I'm over qualified but in reality not, so it worked out great. I may even go all the way eventual and finish the certification process. That's still in the planning stages. I was supposed to look into it over the summer but it always got placed on the back burner. Time to revisit...
Band is done playing. I should really get to work. My lunch didn't agree with me and I spent my time listening to the band lying down. Ugh. Back to cleaning now!
Now, every now and again we'll find something strange that surfaces in the backyard. Nothing like the ring that someone found on BYC once, I wish! Lots of tile shards from our bathroom. Today DH was walking the puppy out there when he looked down to see eyes looking up at him, and a blue nose..... he dug around a bit to discover the head of a male Smurf. Creeeeeepy! We suspect it's been there since the previous owners where here. DH bought the house about 27 years ago!
Oh Henrietta that is nothing! We find pieces of old farm machinery, my hens keep digging up glass in their run, we found old glass (like realllll old) medicine vials, we found the top of a tin today with a First Aid cross on it (looks to be perhaps the top of a tin from a childrens nurses costume from ages ago, its all rusted and was buried pretty far down in the ground). We found a 50's kettle....
One time a few years back I was potting up some transplants and found a 14 k gold (marked on the clasp tag) bracelet in my potting soil bag! The soil was even on sale!
My husband was sitting there watching me dig it out and asked if there is a gold bracelet in every bag!!
Usually I find things like old rusty nails ... in my tire.
Yeah, FF, me too. We find shards of broken glass and nails mostly. We're just not used to the stuff that rises to the surface looking back at us. I'd love to find 50s kettles and gold bracelets. Papa Smurf was frankly a little creepy! Did I mention, it was just his head????
Overall I love September. It's probably my favorite month if I had to choose. But.....I am sooooooooo tired! It's amazing how much more so than when I am working "for myself" doing things at home during the summer. Work is working out, so to speak. New schools, new supervisor, new ways of doing things. We are ironing out our schedules and should be ready to start seeing all kids next week, some sooner. My supervisor and I were just chatting about some things that needed doing and we ended up coming up with a plan to develop a language/vocabulary curriculum that will suppliment the reading program. Big project but exciting!
I may be writing my first ever letter to the editor soon. In 2006 our town voted in favor of accepting a grant from the state to build a pre-k thourgh 8 magnet school with a 95% reimbursement rate. It has taken until now for the building committee to find a possible site that met all requirements. Tonight we found out that the town government, specifically the First Selectman, has been doing everything she can to prevent this project from happening, due to her own ajenda. When the vote first occured we were given a projected opening date of 2009. Well, at this point a land deal hasn't even been finalized. Now we're looking at 2012. Students from our town who would attend the school will be chosen by lottery so there isn't even a guarantee that DS would get in, but I was so excited by this project anyway. The theme of the school would be enviroment and culture. He could potentially enter as a 5th grader. Without getting into a lot of detail about the issues in our public school system here, I am really hoping that this will be an option at least. I worked at our middle school last year and really don't think my son would get the best education possible there. Moving is not an option at this point. Home schooling either.
At this point all extensions that could be applied for to delay the building have been used up. If they don't break ground by June 30 2010 the grant goes away. $38 million. I'm so frustrated over the whole thing. I know the economy has taken a down turm since the original vote. I know there are people who truly can't afford a .02 hike their mil rate. But I also know that my son has 26 kids in his second grade class this year. A new school would help alleviate the over crowding. 45 kids from each grade level in our town would go to the new school. There are 4 elementary schools, of which ours is the largest. With redistricting, it could make a big difference.
I'm frustrated because I feel like my vote and all the other votes in favor back in 2006 counted for nothing if this school doesn't end up getting built. Even if my kid doesn't end up ever setting foot in the building as a student I'm going to be disappointed.
We're looking into alternatives for next year. If the deal is completely off we'll start looking around. It has to be local and it can't be too expensive. We're just now paying off his kindergarten year at a Montessori school. One option would be a different Montessori school but the tuition is over $8000 a year! I didn't pay that much for my first year of college!! The Catholic school in town is another option that I need to look into. There aren't any other magnet schools on the east side of the Connecticut River so that's not an option. It may be if another town gets the grant that we were supposed to get.
School year's just started and I'm already frustrated to tears.
I'll stop ranting now.
This weekend one of the largest fairs in CT takes place. It is supposed to be 82 degrees and sunny on Saturday. We both got paid this week. I'm looking forward to being a country bumpkin of a mom at the fair, eating my weight in fried food from one end of the fair to the other (not really-I know too well the price I'll pay.....), running into former students and coworkers and enjoying life in the country. I will fantasize about buying a small farm house with a few acres in one of our surrounding towns, having more animals and a family who is willing and eager to help care for them.
Mmm, tired. I need to be at work at 7:30 which means getting DS who is not a morning person to his Before School Care program by 7:10. His chores and homework are done, his clothes set out, his lunch packed (that's a whole 'nother story....) He's been pretty good about getting up, making his bed and getting dressed before he even heads to the bathroom. It's just getting him to eat that's a pain.
