Farmfresh- Thanks for the reminder about the Corn Meal Mush! I've never made it, but it sounds like my kinda meal!

Amos- Here's what's in my castille soap. I bought it online, and I don't know how cost effective it is, but it only has ingredients that I recognize, so that counts for something, right? Here are the ingredients.

Water, Saponified Organic Coconut and Olive Oils (with retained glycerine), organic Jojoba oil, organic Aloe Vera, and Rosemary extract.
It is unscented, and foams nicely. I dilute it 1/4 cup soap to 1 cup water. Someday maybe I could make it myself? My hair is about halfway down my back, and I usually keep it braided or otherwise contained. I did go through a bit of over-oily hair when I switched from commercial brands, as castille soap does not strip natural oils from the hair and scalp. But now it's fine.

DrakeMaiden- Even on Google Earth, you can't see my parents house. It's totally underneath a giant maple tree. While we might seem like conspiracy theorists we're no---- Oh wait, we ARE. I just don't trust the media, is that so wrong? I can't imagine them asking when you leave for work and such! I could go off on a huge tangent about the UN, but I will restrain myself. :tongue

LOL, what? You don't have a tin foil hat on? You know you can make one at home for pretty cheap, right? :gig

Seriously, the more I know the more I have to wonder. I suppose some would call me a conspiracy nutcase, but I consider myself "eyes wide open." And just maybe I don't trust human nature so far as I can throw my tin foil hat.

Oh, and just because you can't see something from Google Earth, doesn't mean it can't be seen from above. ;)

Amos- I tried some cheap castille soap from Trader Joe's... I would NOT recommend it! It has glycerin added to it, which makes your hair greasy. Retained is fine, but not additional glycerin! Also, the more olive oil, the better quality it is.

DrakeMaiden- I just try to do my own research, from all possible angles, before I'll believe something. It's all about money and power for the majority of people. That's why I just want some land, and a low-key job. I just don't CARE about the silly politics and fads and hype.

This is entirely un Self Sufficient related but... I must be the meanest person on earth. I can't stand screaming children of any age. Can't. I know, I know! I have no kids and thus have no right to protect my EARS. Fussing, or a small bit of crying, yes. Screaming, NO. Parent's tend to spend hours and hours at JoAnn's. If their kid gets tired or hungry or whatever, they never leave the store. No, fabric is more important that that.

Arg. Sorry. I just had a bunch of screaming children at work- too old for it to be colic- and the parents ignored them for HOURS. One lady in particular. Her child did not cry much, he's just unruly and she allows him to do whatever he wants. He takes thread and throws it around, zippers, pulling fabric until it falls on the floor, etc. "Pattern Lady" as we know her, just looks at pattern books for hours, while he does whatever.

TMI warning to any guys. My goal is to make a few more feminine pads today. I have 4 light, 6 regular, and 2 heavy. It's almost enough, but not quite. I have a couple "oops" ones, that I'm not counting. Some people's blogs say that they only have to do one wash, but that seems like a lot of sitting, even if you change the water. Two is more like it. I'm going to time it so that I can do other laundry with them.

I hear ya on screaming kids. :hide
I love kids! But on occasion I'll run into a screamer, that just screams and screams, and parents like Pattern Lady must be immune to it by then.. Maybe they are bleeding internally..? LOL

A simple cry for a while is fine, they get over it soon. Like my niece, she flings herself as dramatically as possible onto the nearest person and has a good cry on their shoulder, its kind of adorable XD.

Guess its a part of growing up. I used to be a screamer from the worst ear infections. Bleh. I still hear stories of my mom driving several hours to pick up my sister with me screaming the entire way.. I guess I'm just thankful she didn't chuck me out the window!

The castile soap recipe I use is olive oil and lye... pretty basic.

I still have not braved up to using it for shampoo - yet.

How do you use it? Do you make it into a liquid or gel form?

Amos- Yeah, for the sake of my sanity I try to reason that there's something I don't know about going on. Ear infection, or something like that. With most, though, I just don't see why they stay in the store. It's not like we sell anything necessary for life. It's not like they're in a grocery store buying medication or something. Especially Pattern Lady. The pattern books only change every season, it's not like there's anything new in the book since yesterday! Oh, when I used to close, she'd come in the door at 8:55 (with no kids) and stay until 9:10. We closed at 9:00. /rant

FarmFresh- I buy it as a liquid, and just dilute it. That's all I do! It's a bit scary at first, because until you put the vinegar rinse, you're hair is going to SQUEAK, and be hard to run your fingers through. But when you do the vinegar, it's like magic. Suddenly your hair's fine. I can run a comb though it as soon as I get out of the shower. I was horrified the first time I used it because of how different my hair felt. But now, and I haven't been using it that long, it seems normal. I'm so used to the way commercial shampoo works, that it takes a bit to adjust.

Haha, its always like that when you have hard water like at our house. I know what you mean though; first time I tried the baking soda it made my hair feel hard and I thought my hair was gonna crisp up and break. LOL, but nope.. added the ACV and I still have hair.
