Here are some pictures of the rose plant I so badly neglected. I didn't fertilize or water or prune it until it had tons of new growth on it.

In this one you can also see the hydranga above the rose, catmint to the left, and lavender to the right.

I thought I better mention something I heard recently about real estate. I heard that houses with "green" features are selling much better than those without. I doubt your parents are interested in doing much in the way of improvements to the house they are selling, but I thought I should at least mention it. Food for thought.

BBH- Thanks! The last pic is now my background!

DrakeMaiden- It's true, we don't want to put much more money into the house. The fact is that we will not get that money back out of it. But we're having someone come to wash the windows and replace some screens that are either missing or damaged. I just can't see a huge amount we can do. Personally, I don't think all this lawn is eco-friendly, since it requires water. I would replace with appropriate scrubs and flowers that are native to this area, if I had my choice. BUT people with kids want a big yard with a lawn, so oh well. We are playing up the fact that the house has tons of natural light. I keep telling my parents to have a nice talk with our Realtor for (cheap) ideas, but they drag their feet about everything.

Are you having to keep the lawn watered!?!!!!

It would be interesting to find out what sorts of people are buying houses in your area. I know there was a large influx of retirees a few years ago . . . is that still most of the market? Or are there many young families buying up there too? :hu

Well, I'm not watering the lawn but that's because I don't particularly like having a big lawn. Or one that resembles a golf course. Maybe one big enough for badminton or something, not perfect or bright green or anything. And since we had 28 days without rain, it's patchy and sad looking right now.

A lot of people retire up here, but they won't want this house because the master bedroom is upstairs. It is very close to an elementary school, though. It's nice because the yard is big and the house isn't that old. Lots of times either you get a 70s house with a decent yard, or a brand new house with a yard the size of a postage stamp. And we're only about five minutes from a grocery store and the highway. But no one's buying unless the price is outrageously low. We just can't price too much under what we're asking or we'll own on our mortgage, and we can't do that either. And the few couples that were interested have to wait until their houses sell before they can make an offer.

Those are really pretty! My mom's old fashioned roses are blooming, absolutey full of blossums, I might have to take a picture.

Henny, you should take a look at my journal, I'm pretty sure you could find someone to live with and let you have chickens
You just have to work, but your able bodied I'm sure.

Henny - Amos is right. Lots of us here need young strong backs.

Maybe you could list YOURSELF in the Sell-Trade section. It could read something like - Will trade hard work and a young strong back for a place to live where I can keep chickens.

Edited to add - Love the roses. That is a beautiful photo.
