Just wanted to give a quick hey to let everyone know we're here. We've decided to leave the city life and start a homestead. First thing we're trying to get accustomed to is things are on a different time schedule in a small town. There's a population of just over 800 people and a lot of stuff stops when the sun goes down. The post office closes at noon and is only open for one hour on Saturday. The gas station closes at 10 pm and the next town is 12 miles away. Did I mention that it's dark? Still trying to wrap my head around how dark it is with no lights from the city stuff. Anywho, just wanted to let you all know that we're here.

Welcome!!! Once you get a taste of the country life where the street lights are a blanket of stars and the slow pace allows for time to stop and smell the roses you won't ever want live anywhere else!!! When everything shuts down, its Southerners "tea time" on the front porch with friends and neighbors and sometimes that could even be the same person ;) Enjoy it and learn Chicken math with us :gig

I moved from city of 60,000 where I grew up to a town of 2,000. It was huge adjustment, took a few years for the culture shock to wear off! I still can't believe that every restaurant in town is closed on Mondays! My family moved out of town a few miles so it's even more quiet now. :love

You will learn to love it and wonder how you could ever tolerate living in a city! When I go back to my hometown I notice the air quality is worse. I notice all the pollution, light pollution especially.

Welcome to the forum, I hope you share your adventures and "learning experiences". <--- those are the things that make you want to howl at the universe now, but will be funny as heck in a decade.

@Cire8002 - Welcome from a few states over in Alabama! Loving that old Ford Tractor in the photo- what year is it?

If you're coming from a big city, it's a big change. I went through it myself a few years back. The rural life isn't for everyone, but if you have a goal in mind to be self-sufficient just give it some time. A word of advice for you- not everything will go right immediately. Prayer, patience, and time are big factors in a homestead's growth in my opinion. This will give you a chance to try new things, raise new critters, pick up new hobbies, and all in all just put in quality work and time with your family. We'd love to learn more about your plans, your goals, your current situation, and what inspired you to make this big move. Here's some good questions to help introduce yourself:

1.) What is your homestead currently like? (size, animals, plants, trees)
2.) What goals do you have in mind in this journey? Any certain animals you want to raise, things to build, or hobbies to try?
3.) What and/or who inspired you to become a homesteader?
4.) How large is your family? Any children to help and learn along the way?
5.) What's the current condition of your place? Untamed wilderness? An already established livestock pen? Any barns?
6.) Do you already know, or want to learn how, to raise your own livestock and produce?
7.) What helpful hobbies do you have now that can help you be successful in this journey?

Welcome from Lindale Texas, just north of Tyler. Put your general location in your avatar, if you don't mind. You will love country living. Life is slower, people are friendlier, it is just a better life. We moved 3 years ago from Livingston, now we're on 8 acres and having a blast. Love it! So glad to have you here!
