I finally found a combination that seems to work really well in our dishwasher, with our water. Some might remember that I have trouble with the homemade laundry soap, and I think it is our city water that is the problem, and the addition of a tablespoon or so of liquid bleach, well-diluted, is the solution for the laundry.

With the dishwasher, even the liquid Cascade, which worked the best, didn't get things clean enough, and in every load, some dishes and flatware had to be re-washed.

We ran out of liquid a couple of weeks ago along with running low on funds, and dh picked up a box of cheaper powdered Cascade.

I have been home more, working in the kitchen, and have been using half homemade powder and half powdered Cascade. Yesterday, dh noticed that my loads were cleaner....much cleaner....than his with the liquid Cascade he bought again a few days ago.

Now he wants to know how I do it. Before, he would roll his eyes at my homemade attempts....not at other projects, just the dishwasher, for some unknown reason.

So I am, at his request, making up a mix of my magic formula. It will contain one part borax, one part washing soda, and two parts powdered Cascade. Used only in the pre-wash compartment, so the dishes are rinsed twice. This leaves no residue on the dishes.

It is a good compromise for us, so I thought I would share!

I would like to fiddle with the fresh lemon recipe again, maybe this winter when the gardens don't demand so much attention.

I found this "recipe", but haven't yet tried it...

pour regular table salt (or baking soda) into the detergent openings in the dishwasher door, and then pour about a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide over the salt until it's a bit sludgy and slushy. Close the door and give it a whirl.

Well, I have the borax and washing soda from making laundry detergent. I also use powdered Cascade. Maybe I will try stretching it a bit. I had bought a "green" dishwasher detergent that left the horrid white film on everything. I threw it out. It killed me, but I just couldn't deal with the film.

Unfortunately, the price of lemons has gotten out of control here in New England, so I haven't "fiddled with the fresh lemon recipe" at all. Maybe I'll try it with a lime next time they are on sale....
