What about using Zote instead of Fels?

"
ZOTE is a laundry soap made with coconut oil and tallow, containing optical brighteners, which shape and size are ideal to wash by hand. Actually, in Spanish jabonzote (Jabn Zote) means a big soap.

Many years ago, in the rural areas of Mexico it was common to see women washing their clothes with ZOTE on special boards in the rivers, or in washbasins at their homes; since its launching in 1970, ZOTE became one of the favorite products for Mexican housewives to remove difficult stains and wash delicate clothes.

In the beginning, ZOTE was made with a nearly manual process. Nowadays, we have the latest equipment and state of the art technology to manufacture this and all of our products; but we continue keeping the original formula that made ZOTE the absolute leader in the Mexican market.

But, how is it that ZOTE is still preferred by housewives in our days, when it is increasingly less common for people to wash by hand?

The basic natural ingredients used in the manufacture of ZOTE are the same used to make bath soaps; therefore, these are non-abrasive ingredients, which make ZOTE the ideal product to wash delicate garments which may be damaged in the washing machine (such as sweaters, knitwear and underwear), preserving them in good conditions and extending their life. In view of this characteristic, a lot of people use it to wash the clothes of people with sensitive skin or babys clothes.

In spite of the above, it has outstanding cleaning properties which make it ideal to pre-wash shirt necks and cuffs and to remove difficult stains.

Another of the distinctive features of ZOTE is its fragrance: essential citronella oil, a plant that originally came from Europe, which posseses a pleasant smell similar to lime; thanks to this ingredient, the clothes washed with ZOTE smell fresh and fragrant for several days."

I have always been partial to coconut :D

Hmmmm. I've been using the laundry soap made with Fels.
But after reading this I think I may try Ivory and Zote. They sound
more organic and I like moving away from petroleum products. Maybe save the Fels for serious dirt.

BTW, while on soap topics I always use Dr Bronners Liquid Castiel soap in the shower and at the bathroom sink. I love it and now they make one that is Almond with Hemp oil. Its a good price if you mail order from www.iherb.com

One day they were out so I purchased a similar product called Woods.
When it came on a frosty winter day all the fats in it had hardened and I could clearly see the coconut oil in it. Its really rich stuff and I wasn't sure if I should wash with it or eat it.

Getting down to the bottom of the bottle, the fats were plugging up the squirt dispenser I put it in so I added some grapeseed oil that I use for cooking. It just made the whole thing luscious and nice to wash with.

So now I just got my regular Dr Bronners in and I added grapeseed oil and I like it even better.

Makes me think about learning to make more soap products....:)

I have been looking but haven't seen Zote anywhere. We even have quite the ethnic population here, so you think the stores would carry these things....I'll keep looking harder now, it sounds so perfect!

I also use and love the liquid castile soap, Dr Bronners or other brands. I like it in the foaming pump dispensers, it makes it stretch even further! It would clog up the regular pump dispenser and then it would squirt all over me sometimes, but I have no problem with the foaming dispensers. I got a few of the Target brand ones (nasty, put it in the bathrooms at the office to get it used up more quickly!) and just refill them with about 1-4 soap to water.

Thanks for the tip. I've been having that exact same problem. I've never heard of foaming soap dispensers...at target, hugh?

I met Dr Bronner once, a very interesting guy. Like a mad scientist with thick coke bottle glasses, nearly blind at the time. He was a German Jew and a scientist who escaped Nazi Germany. Much of his family died there. He really believed what he puts on his soap bottles and when he talked he would go on and on kinda like the soap bottles but not so preachy. He's gone now too.

Around here we have Mexican grocery stores...owened and operated by Mexicans for the Mexican family in mind I assume...they carry really different products. I bet you could find Zote in a store like that. I'll look and see.

You can find them at any store that sells liquid soap. Look at the pump, it will be bigger, and the bottle will say "foaming" on it. It amazes me what they sell that bottle for, with just a bit of soap in it and mostly water! Target's were the cheapest.

I figured, from the bottle, that Dr Bronner was a little on the strange side! Now I will think of him more kindly. Probably suffered from a major case of PTSD.

My Walmart and the Mexican grocery both sell Zote. I have never seen fels in this area.

I still haven't found washing powder, but I haven't stopped by Tru Value yet and hit their pool section.

Hmmm, I didn't look for Zote at Walmart. I will check it out next time I'm there. Thanks for the tip. Our local Walmart is in an area with a high Latino population, so here's hopin'!

I haven't been able to find Zote anywhere either, and we also have a large Latino population...it IS in the detergent section, isn't it?

Anybody have any online sources to order from, if I still can't locate it

I found the fels naptha in with the bath soap, so I'd look there, since it is a bar soap and whoever decides where things should go on the shelves obviously doen't have a clue!
