Ok, Scott, you win. I will ask that this thread be shut down rather than watch it devolve into nastiness.

Thank you for all of you who incredibly, nearly miraculously (considering the topic) participated respectfully for so incredibly long.

A wise old man once told me that respect is a two way street.

Can we agree to disagree and have a drink or a sandwich or a hug together? :D :hugs :love :) :thumbsup :frow
that is one of the rules in my family. i'm the only liberal and the one interested in self-reliance and sustainability, so things often end up in debates. my mom, in her wisdom, said that for every debate we have, we have to say/do one nice thing for that person. my siblings and i are all in our 20s so it can be pretty hilarious watching us be nice to each other when we actually want to snap each others head off... but it helps.

my uncle (who just happens to be a Republican State Representative) and i got into a huge argu... i mean debate the other day about the location of my new market garden. he doesn't like where i want to put it because you can see it from the arena where his wife runs the equestrian school. he thinks the front section of the farm should be "well manicured to give a professional look." i said, "well, it's a farm, so i can't think of anything that looks more professional than a garden..."

i had to make him some cookies and he had to move the tiller for me. i'm sure we'll have more debates on this topic, but who doesn't like homemade cookies? (maybe that's why he argues with me.... gonna have to do something different next time)

You just happened to be the most recent person in a long chain of people claiming SS and liberal/Democratic/progressive political views cannot coexist.
There you go again. That is not unlike the "prohibit" untruthful accusation you spat out earlier in this thread.

I said nothing of the kind...yet you say that I " just happened to be the most recent person"....
You said you "couldn't wrap your head around" how people could believe both. Believe both = both beliefs coexisting in the same person (which is what me&thegals means, btw, just to clarify). Because you declined, until page 26 or so of this thread, to EXPLAIN what you meant by 'couldn't wrap your head around', it got not-unreasonably interpreted as meaning "did not believe it was possible".

Thus, you sure did SEEM to be saying you didn't think it was possible for a person to believe in liberal political views and SS ideals at the same time.

If you hadn't chosen to ignore about eleventy-three opportunities to clarify what you meant, this misunderstanidng wouldn't have *happened* :/

A "long chain"? Well, since I am new I don't know much about your long chain.
Well, common sense and basic etiquette when joining a new group is to assume that the group actually does have preexisting history, and either read back-threads to find out about it, or (equally reasonably) figure out you will find out as you go along, and *deal with it*. Possibly it DID come as a surprise to you that this has been asserted time and time again by other forum members as well; but it was said in the very first post in this thread IIRC, so it's not like you didn't find out til now.

The conversation that is this forum did NOT start the day you signed up ;)

But, one thing is clear. If you are conservative and you do offer your opinion on here.......it will be scrutinized to the fullest.... :ep
Well I should hope so. If you are liberal and you do offer your opinion on here, it will be scrutinized to the fullest. If you are centrist, or socialist, or "anarchist in the process of holing up in the mountains with lots of ammo because the world is ending", or whatever else, your opinion will be scrutinized to the fullest.

It's called intelligent discussion.

Now that I know that I have to spell out every thing I say on here so that it is easier to understand, I will make every effort to do so.
See, another good thing to come out of this conversation. Recognition of how important it is to be CLEAR, and EXPLICIT, and respond to requests for clarification.

It is useful anywhere in life, in fact ;)

You said you "couldn't wrap your head around" how people could believe both
That was me. And I can't because with my belief system, they are a contradiction. I don't do contradictions.

Here was my exact statement...
"It does look like a contradiction to me to support a political party with policies that create dependency at the same time you are trying for self-sufficiency. Can't wrap my brain around that."

Of course, I haven't read most of the last 24 pages or so, so I can't comment on what anyone else said.

Sorry Wifezilla but Scott said that TOO (I have no idea whether he said it before or after you, but it is in post #16 if you are archaeologically inclined):

I also cannot wrap my head around how someone can say they want to be self sufficient, but still support programs that diminish the great American desire of being self sufficient by providing for you through social programs.

Well Scott, been gone all day putting food on the table and I come back to see you are still desperately attempting to shut the thread down. I've been spanked for much less.

Scott's viewpoint is stated very simply in his signature.

Reinbeau if you have had PM's complaining about all the liberals on this forum I am very surprised. This is the most I've ever seen the people to the left of center speak out. It's been a great thread as is evidenced by the length.

What I have taken away from it is that people left of center are amazingly enough a little more compatible with SS.
