My friend had another friend do her illustrations (paid), and the publisher would not accept them. She was told that they had their own illustrator that would do them.

I would have a hard time explaining what I had pictured for the page, I think.
If it comes to that I'll self publish. There are plenty companies that will allow you to send your work to them and they publish it for you and then it's up to you to market it and sell it. I know exactly what I want for each page and since I've hired (now 2) illustrators to get the job done, it'll be my way. Besides the books were originally intended for family but somehow it's snowballed and I have unofficial orders for them from outside people. Which is nice but it makes getting the illustrator on the ball that much more important.

I agree! I read about self publishing, sounds like it's the way to go for a lot of writers. It's great that you have 'unofficial' orders, that says a lot about your writing! :D

I find it amazing that the author of the Harry Potter books was turned down by what, three publishers? I bet someone's kicking themselves in the rear every time a new movie comes out. I wonder how many other wonderful pieces have been denied, too...

Yeah I watched a story on J.K. Rowling. And in order to get published she had to hide the fact that she was a woman. That is just absolutely crazy!

Elevan, I bet we saw the same movie. Boggled my mind.

Neko, I just now saw your post and link. I'm heading there now to take a look. :)

I write and self-publish. Have a couple already out there but my goal is to have another 2 by the end of december (minimum) and a whole lot more in 2012. Most of mine are non-fiction but I have some fiction I wrote when I was a publisher that I'm thinking about pulling back out.

self publish?

is that expensive? You foot all the bill and then you must sell your own books? Is that right?

Hang on... yes, here's a link to my DeviantArt page (and no, it's not that kind of deviant): http://thexnekoxchan.deviantart.com/

You can see the art, photos and bits of writing I've done.
Neko, you have been writing and drawing for a long time! I tried to leave a comment, but I couldn't without joining. I loved some of the pics and the story about the cat in the rain? That could have been me you were writing about.
