Crazy Cat Lady
This sort of works if you are talking about items that get sold a lot (some clothing, some popular collectables, etc).Wallybear said:There is one rule that if you learn it will make it fool proof. Know what an item sells for first. If you know that then you have no problems.
Doesn't work well or at all for one of a kinds, though, which is what many people are drawn to when they try to do this.
Also it is not 100% "foolproof" because prices can CHANGE between your buying the item and being able to sell it; because items can suffer an unexpected severe depreciation like being eaten by a dog or inconveniently dropped <crash!>; and because you need to be better at spotting fakes than the people you're selling *to* are.
I'm certainly not saying one can't do it, I'm just saying that intelligent well-educated people certainly CAN lose money trying it (especially when new to the endeavor) despite good intentions and sensible preparation.
Whereas, when you get a job (be it a one-off or Actual Job) you generally do not have to put up money upfront and DO generally get paid.
