I guess I am a little uptight about the whole discussion with you, because I have seen way too many who sit on public assistance rather then getting off of their asses and doing something.
ExCUUUUSE me? Did you READ my posts???????

My suggestion was to get out there and hoof it around asking people if you could do something for them for pay. Beat the pavement, knock on doors, ask everyone you meet, put up fliers "gutter cleaning, end-of-winter dog poo removal, you name it".

HOW exactly is that advising someone to "sit on public assistance".

Sheeez.

you are just starting the workforce?

then find what "kinda interests" you like medical, animals or whatever and strive to get a full time position. Many have started this way and earned good money thru their lifetimes with promotions etc.

you need to think lifetime job at some point...not just "get money now" cause will not sustain you.

Any friends, etc. in a field you desire? A biz that caught your eye, walk in and chat them up etc.
I agree. I liked dogs. I started out with some seriously crappy jobs, but now I have an awesome resume! I have working in the pet care industry for 10 years and have covered almost every aspect of it.

One different thing was when I graduated from high school (2002) the job market was booming. The employment section was 1/2 inch thick! You could literally walk in someplace and get hired on the spot.

Even without that, I do think it is important to try to keep your employment towards one type. So you get a job at McDonalds. Shoot for management. Work in management for a year and then start applying for management positions at companies that better interest you.

I was adamant that my ex stay in one industry and him being a high school dropout with 3 thefts on his record and bad driving record, he still was working. He did burn bridges with every company (after our divorce) and he's stuck working pathetic entry level jobs like telemarketing.

What is your passion? Choose something and run with it. Find something people don't want to do - like scooping dog poop. (There are people that do that for their full time job.) Start a website (can be done for free and not look trashy with crazy ads). Network on Facebook. Get out there and "hoof it" once you've earned enough to pay for paper/printing for flyers.

I'm gonna quit now... :hide

There are plenty of things you can do to make money. May have to do two or three things, but money is there to be made.

Some simple ones..
clean houses
pet sitting
sitting with elderly
babysitting
house sitting
dog walking

Other things you can do that require you to be self motivated...
haul scrap to sell to recycling centers
sell produce and flowers that you grow
sell animals you propagate from your own
sell natural products(acorns, pine cones, ginseng, etc.)that are free for the taking.
Sell fish. Go fishing, clean them, sell the meat.
Make and market a product.
Sell wood for smoking meats.
Pick wild berries to sell at farmer's markets.
Mow yards/lawncare.

There are plenty of ways to make cash, to make enough you may have to diversify and do several of these things, but I have worked from home for years doing some of these things, and when money gets really tight I am working as many of these as possible while they are in season. Sometimes the family pitches in and helps. We spent an enitire late Fall and early winter picking up acorns to sell to pay the house payment. It kept us from losing our home. EVERYBODY picked acorns, myself, the husband, the kids, and the eldests boyfriend(now her husband ;) ) at the time even helped.

Don't sell yourself or your abilities short. Don't keep trying to find a job and waste all of your time and energy looking for something that isn't there. MAKE your own job. Employ yourself, be your own boss, and enjoy it!! It helps pass the time while waiting for a call/interview and puts a little money in your pocket.

Can't we all just get along.....

Lots of good suggestions Wannabefree.... I too waited tables for a long time and you can make good money at it if you get on at the right restaurant. The economy is tight now and waiting tables can be hit or miss sometimes.

Can you sew? Iron? I know there are always older people looking for someone to mend and iron. Throw a flier up at the grocery store and laundy mat. That is if you can sew/iron. :D

Wally & Pat,
Do you need a time out???

there is my little idea list so far. babysitting is a last resort for me because of people around here. i dont agree with the way the discipline the kids... or rather how they dont discipline the kids.
i only have two goats right now and i'm hoping to sell their kids (mid-may) and buy another milking doe and the rest will pay for feed. i want to get rabbits to breed and sell but you gotta have money to make money. so i'm asking for $ and rabbit supplies for my b-day. ha ha!
thanks for the ideas! keep em coming!

Some folks are selling pennies on Ebay  Looks like they're gettin a pretty penny for them though :p

Start checking your coins and the ones that are more solid copper or silver, set them aside. You can find the relevant dates several places on the internet. It may not be much, but I just added it to my list of things to make a bit of cash ;) $100 face value high copper content pennies sold for about $180 :ep :hu
