They showed up about a month ago, outside at the corner of the porch, where I put the feeder every year. They hung out there and I know they were yelling at us "Hey, we're back, where's the food?" :gig When I'm sitting out there on the bench they fly right up over my head to sip away. Cute little buggers!

OK, totally dumb question; how can you tell them apart to know how many have visited? I watch them when my Monarda is blooming and can tell male from female but not much more than that.

I've only seen ruby throated here.

I can tell the males from the females, and I can always tell when there are two males around, because they fight - they are little demons when they battle! And yes, Ticks, we only have the one kind, ruby throated, near us. Those west of the Rockies have so many other kinds I'm envious!

My mom saw her first today also! Actually her cat spotted first. Luckily they were on opposite sides of the screen door.
We're strickly ruby-throated here too.
Our Baltimore Orioles have been back for several days too. I could sit outside and listen to them all day.

We have feeders set up by the kitchen window (1), by the back slider door and patio (2) and on the front porch (3). Sometimes all the feeders are full of birds. Sometimes there is a lot of 'star wars' like zipping going on...because they are very territorial. :D

At the end of the day, we try to take a few moments to watch them and their antics. Last year I got chilly and put on my red sweater. I was sitting on the porch swing next to some cardinal flowers. With all that red, I sure confused one little lady, insisted on checking out my arm. :p
