So, is it typical that you don't get all the flesh before you brine it? How do you know when it is completely scraped clean?

Super cool! Just like I did it. So VERY glad that you are doing a picture journal of the process. Maybe it will encourage others to join in.

Really and truly the fleshing (or scraping off the fat and tissue) is the worst part - the rest was a blast!

Also wanted to throw in there that after a couple of years as my truck seat covers my two hides were filthy. :sick I did not know what to do with them, but could certainly NOT afford professional cleaning.

I finally decided... I tanned them - I could ruin them.

I threw them into my washing machine with Murphey's oil soap as the laundry soap. :ep Then I hung them to dry in the shade. WOW they turned out fluffy soft and simply great! :thumbsup

Anyone ever done a deer hide??? I would love to do that this year.....If I killed enough deer and got enough hides from some other people to do it then maybe I could make a teepee for the kids.....:D

I can't imagine that a deer hide would be any different. Perhaps you would need slightly different chemical mix, because sheep hides are greasy, but the rest would be the same. I have done sheep and rabbit hides, but both were hair on. I think you do have an additional step or two if you are de-hairing to make a leather.
