Lovin' The Homestead
I have been lurking for a while and thought I should introduce myself.
My husband and I live on 35 acres in Central Wisconsin with our 3-legged kitty, Lefty and our retired Greyhound, Dixie. We bought the property more than 11 years ago with the intention of moving up here. Eventually our plans include chickens for the eggs (I'm not sure what's going to happen when they get old, they will be my husband's pets. I foresee a chicken graveyard.), bees for honey (if an electric fence is enough deterrent to the bears), Christmas trees and fruit trees, and someday, a wind turbine so we can watch the electric meter spin backwards. We planted 6 apple trees and 2 mulberry trees last year. Unfortunately Bambi had a field day. The apple trees died and the mulberries are trying to come back. We planted another 2 apple trees this spring. All the fruit trees are now fenced. We live in the middle of a farm field with a really long driveway, so we have planted just over 600 evergreens (bought cheap through the DNR) for a windbreak. In the spring, we make maple syrup and in the winter we heat mostly with wood. Right now we have just a small veggie garden.
Most of our plans are on hold for now. Since moving up here at the end of 2007, I have lost 2 jobs and my husband will be losing his job at the end of September. For now, I will be an avid reader and file away ideas for when one of us seemingly has a permanent job.
