Grady, THANK YOU for sharing your firsthand experience with us! I understand these reasons, I wouldn't be comfortable sharing a bathroom and close quarters with men, either :p

While I completely agree with what has been said before (that he can do what he wants, how he wants, and he owes the rest of us nothing), I wonder if Joel would be interested to see the fluff that arose about his policy? He might or might not be interested in adding his reasoning for the policy, so us ornery SS women don't misinterpret things.

And you *definitely* should tell us about your apprenticeship, pretty please :D

Please, please, please, Grady, stick around. I have so many questions for you! And us gals and guys here have a lot of GREAT recipes for your bride-to-be! :D

So, have we learned a little lesson in giving people the benefit of the doubt?

Welcome and thank you, Grady! :) As you can tell, many Joel fans here and questions about his place abound.

It sure would be nice to give us your take on a typical day on Polyface....how difficult or easy it is to move from traditional grazing into intensive grazing, for instance.

Some of us are trying to do this on a really small scale and can't afford a good tour over at Joel's place, but it sure would be nice to hear a little more. I've read all the books but they are a little dated.

Think you could convince Joel to write another?

Thanks for clearing that up! Makes perfect sense. I'm adding my request to the others for a bit more information. We want to know aaalllll about it!

I think it would be great if Joel could add some of his reasoning behind having so few women interns. I'm sure there were at least a few folks who completely turned away without learning much about him or his methods, simply because he "is sexist & backward".

Grady!! Thanks for stopping in. See you at the auction this Saturday, if not before.

Hey, y'all. Glad he could relieve y'all of your suspicions. I dropped him a note and I guess he decided to come in and answer himself. Good writer, isn't he? He should write his own book!

Grady is my beef and milk farmer. We will also probably be buying our pork and lamb from him, as well, all raised the Polyface way with a touch of Phelan Ranch thrown in. I'm hoping to help him during chicken processing time so I can pick up a few Salatin style pointers.

If you are interested in the experience of a Polyface apprentice, you might want to drop by my favorite blog , although it is now closed since the apprenticeship is over. Lots of good things in there.

Unfortunately it lags a bit at the end. Seems the author met this girl, and apparently had other things on his mind besides blogging.

You can also see Grady in this Featherman video tutorial on how to bleed out a chicken.

perhaps you guys are all a lot more understanding and forgiving than me, but i'm still not completely satisfied.

if the issue is one of accommodations, how does he take women on for the summer sessions? accommodations don't come and go with the seasons, at least not around here.

i never doubted that the man loved his family. and i don't think he thinks all women are useless. AND he can, of course, do whatever the heck he likes with his own farm. but i still can't help but feel like this kind of policy does an injustice to women farmers. if he truly believes that a woman can manage hundreds of acres alone (which he must if he let her run a part of his land) why doesn't he see the value in having year-long female apprentices? and, conversely, how does he not see the harm in NOT having year-long female apprentices?

I assume you were referring towards me, as I think I'm the only one who used both words - but I fully stand by what I said with the capital and bold IF that was his reasoning for not apprenticing women. Again, if you missed that part, please refer back.

If you don't agree with me, that's fine, you can drop it now.
