So, I went out this morning to get a look at the "hay" hubby got from a friend.....for $3.00 / 50 lb.
Its not really "hay" Its Horse forage.

Its really chopped up, smushed into plastic bags...with molasses added. Very compacted! I guess for $3.00 a bag, I cant complain...but the sheep didnt seem too interested. Maybe its because its just something new? Not sure. Anyways...because it is chopped up...I can use thier regular hay feeder...so I had to come up with something else. We had this plastic barrell..and I wasnt able to use it for rain water, because of a hole in the bottom. Soooo, with a sawsall..we cut it in half, and now have a way to feed this chopped feed. I am planning to use the other half for a hog feeder. We will see how long it lasts! LOL

OK, I need to get back upstairs and finish dinner. BIL is coming over...and I am makeing fried chicken....mashed taters...corn...gravy, and biscuits..with sliced onion and tomatos. yum yum!
ETA:: Hubby and I were talking this morning..and he said...you feed cracked corn to the animals...right? ( He doesnt do any feeding can you tell?) To which I replied...yes, and the hogs too, when we get them. Then he said...Is $1.00 a 50 pound bag a good price? NOT a dollar a pound....a dollar for 50 pounds!!! YES YES YES I said!! So, he then proceeds to say, well good, I ordered a pallet full. Woohoo! Nothing wrong with the corn...just a friend of a friend can get it cheap! NOW I have to find a place to store it...away from critters! LOL

Currently in Missouri our whole corn (which is grain only just as it comes off the cob) is $7.73 for a 50 pound bag and cracked corn (grain that has been broken up) is $7.79 for 50 pounds. This price is up almost double from a couple of years ago. The combination of high oil prices and more corn being used for Ethanol production has caused the prices of all grains to sky rocket.

As far as storing that grain, an old chest type deep freeze that doesn't work but still closes tight is a great grain storage bin. They can usually be had for the hauling. They are even lockable! :)

Whats your fried chicken recipe debbie?

Price here 50 pounds cracked corn is 6 US dollars, animal feed.

Your sheep doesn't look none to happy about that hay stuff. But you know hubby has a good friend!!

I had baked chops, roasted taters, lima beans and corn mixed together. There is a name for it but I dont remember what it is called, but it was good.

I am about to make nanner pudding when I finish this post. Wifes a sucker for my nanner pudding.... LOL :p :D

well.. than maybe we should think about some major corn smuggling operation :)
couse around here I can easily get my hands on dried (13-15% humidity) feed quality corn, at about half that price :) but since you are talking about wet, straight off the cob grain it would make it even cheaper:) should I start looking at shipping containers and a cost of shipment?:)
