Ah, I see where that rain was coming from we are having right now. We have sand and hardpan up here. Some areas drain well where there is lots of sand, but most areas have hard pan about 5in under the surface. We have pump systems going across all pastures so I can relate to your pain. I will be pumping as I get home tonight as well. I love your garden though, I have to learn so much more when it comes to gardening.

Jenn, Im not sure what "hard pan" is....??? Would a sub soiler be able to break that up?? We have been putting in drainage lines....it seems to be working so far.
SO, I just came in from having a talk with the onion sets...I asked them to go get in the garden...they just looked at me like I was crazy....and the whole time, the potato seed was giving me the eye.....guess I shouldn't even ask them to go get in the garden. Looks like I need to get busy.

I have the same problems when I tell my horses to clean up after themselves. Shesh, like that is too much to ask

Here, wikipedia saved me from having to explain hardpan. Imagine having concrete under your topsoil. And it is EVERYWHERE!

In soil science, agriculture and gardening, hardpan or ouklip is a general term for a dense layer of soil, usually found below the uppermost topsoil layer.[1] There are different types of hardpan, all sharing the general characteristic of being a distinct soil layer that is largely impervious to water. Some hardpans are formed by deposits in the soil that fuse and bind the soil particles. These deposits can range from dissolved silica to matrices formed from iron oxides and calcium carbonate. Others are man-made, such as hardpan formed by compaction from repeated plowing, particularly with moldboard plows, or by heavy traffic or pollution.

That's one reason I like the area where I am. Our soil is more sandy than clay. But at the farm, it's clay. Hubby and I were heading from the farm to Harbor Freight. While were driving, we're both looking at this one area and saying how nice it was and how we'd like to have property in that area. And I know that the soil is basically what we have now. So, maybe in a couple of years, we'll be able to start looking for land over that way.

OK, so yesterday while I was gone from the farm all day, I worried about my Suzie. My Alpine. She is bagged up, ligs gone..and moody. I just knew she would drop those kids while I was gone. Well, she didn't. Then, today...I must have made 10 trips out to the barn, checking on her. Nothing!! This evening I went out to close the barn, and feed.....Suzie didn't want her feed. Now, I know it was super warm today...she has plenty fresh water, hay, baking soda, minerals, salt....but, for her to not want her feed?? I also noticed a small bit of white mucus from her....hoohoo. :/ Every step I took...she was right with me...wanting me to scratch her back right above the tail. As I left, she jumped up on the gate, and bawled to me. :/ She hasn't done that in MONTHS! So, I went back out at 9:30 pm to check again...nuttin. :th I have to leave tomorrow morning, and will be gone for a few hours. She better NOT drop them while I am gone, however...we all know how goats are hu??

Maybe if you squeeze her, she'd pop em out.

Just came in from checking on Suzie....still no babies! Oh she is wearing me out! She KNOWS how anxious I am to see what they will look like, and yet, she keeps them from me. BAD GOAT! :p We have storms coming in the next few days....I bet that's what she is waiting on. I sure don't want to be stuck in the barn during a storm... :hide
