Sorry to hear about your woes. I lost a duck a few weeks ago, and I set out traps. Never did catch anyhting, and haven't lost another critter since. Now, I hve 18 (so far) chicken hatched, and 30 meaties coming tomorrow. Hopefully they will be safe. I suspecvted it weas as coon, but now Im not so sure. I think it might have bee the neighbours dog.
Thanks, MTH! Good luck with all your meaties!

:fl Hoping the traps work!

...well, at least for now. :)

Got two of them. Not with the traps, DH was way too excited to do some sharpshooting tonight. And umm...well we got the gruesome scene hillfarm was looking for! :gig
Now he's out on the porch, ummmm...taking care of business, because he wants a coonskin hat....:th

And now, I'm going to bed. It's been a loooooooooooooooong night and I have to go to work tommorrow :hit

Our neighbor sat out on his porch with his gun the night after he lost a couple hens. He fired at the raccoons when they started heading to the coop and they haven't been back since - been about a year now.

Congrats on catching the coon. We caught 2 skunks and 2 coons over the last 2 weeks so I can sympathize with you.

we have a problem with possums. We have two or three a week round here. If we put out a trap we are sure to catch one or a neighbors cat.

Maybe I should put up signs and bloody axes. hmmmm.

That's what I like about living in the boonies. The only 'pets' we ever see are the cows next door. :D And :fl they don't come back.

We found another one in the trap this morning. I really hate that stupid trap, but we don't really have any other choice right now.

In other news tonight I watched one of our goats jump out of the fenced in area, eat some weeds, then turn around and jump back in the pen. :barnie That freaking goat will...be...the...death...of...me.

Next purchase=electrifying that fence.

To fence in a goat. Build fence. Pour water in it. If it will hold water, it will hold the goat.

I think that is a great strategy. In a handout from a local source, they were discussing how to deal with wildlife. They said many have a "territory" and if you remove one from the territory, a new one will move in.
They said it was better to scare off or "train" the current population that your livestock is off limits rather than continually having new ones to deal with, less work. We have taken that approach (although we liberally use a BB gun, not a real gun) and it has worked well except for a stray dog who has learned to be sneaky.
