Last night was the fourth session of our Back In The Box study. Session 4 is called Calling Or Comfort? Choose Your Moves Wisely.
The John Ortberg quote from this session is: If there is a challenge in front of you, a course of action that would cause you to grow and that would be helpful to people around you, but you find yourself scared about it, theres a real good chance that God is in that challenge.. If youre not facing any challenges too big for you, if it has been a while since you have felt scared, theres a real good chance that youve been sitting in the chair too long.
John Ortbergs Summary: What really matters when God calls you to do something is not whether or not you feel inadequate. Of course you will; you are inadequate. So am I. Thats why God promises to go with us. What matters is your decision. Only people who say yes to challenge, demand, and risk are ever fully alive.
Most of the study was from the book of Daniel. We take a turn at life every time we make a choice - what to eat, what to do, how to spend our time, who we spend our time with. Daniel was a champion at making wise choices, even though he was a captive in Babylon. In the midst of life-threatening challenges, Daniel was confident that God was always with him. His belief allowed him to take risks to live out his deepest commitments to follow Gods call. That is the kind of life I am striving for, but at times, coming out of my comfort zone can be intimidating and frightening.
40 this morning when we woke up; 47 by 9:30am. The forecast high for today is 62, and although the sun is shining beautifully this morning, rain is in the forecast for this afternoon. We are at 52 as of 11:30am.
Rain or Shine, Friday and Saturday are work days at the Habitat for Humanity House build in Orwell. Friday they will be excavating and laying footers. Saturday we will laying brick. Work starts at 8am. If anyone in the area is interested in helping out, contact the HFH office more information.

Today I am getting out my applesauce recipe for ServeFest, so I take enough pint and quart jars to church this week-end. If Mary was able to get the 2 bushels of apples, we will need quite a few jars. I found in my canning supplies a number of unopened boxes of lids for regular and wide mouth pint and quart jars. Pat said someone donated some jars and Sue is bringing jars and apples. Pat is loaning her food mill and Sue is bringing some of hers. Sue also has a peck of apples from her old apple tree as well. This is going to be such fun. I am praying for good weather for all the outdoor projects that are scheduled.
The Have A New Kid By Friday class is starting October 15. I am copying this information from last Sundays bulletin incase anyone wants to get the book for themselves or is interested in having this study at their church.
Parents teach their children their ABCs before they enter school; now its time to teach them the ABCs of life (Attitude, Behavior, and Character). How?, you ask? In Have A New Kid By Friday, Dr. Kevin Leman urges you to take a 5-day challenge to implement a new parenting strategy. Based on cause and effect instead of threats or fears, youll soon be seeing lots of improvement in your childs behavior and experience a closer bond as well. Have A New Kid By Friday includes gutsy advice on over 100 of the hottest topics for parents, including bedtime battles, lying, argumentative attitudes, sibling rivalry, talking back, and many more. If youre tired of defiant attitudes and power struggles, follow these principles and youll have a new kid by Friday! Want a great kid? Want to be a great parent? Take the 5-day challenge. This is a 6-week study meeting at the church 10-11:30 am, Thursday mornings beginning October 15. Free childcare will be provided.
Parenting is such an important part of our lives. There were many things I did the wrong thing, lots of times I lost patience, lots of time I wished I could have spent with the children instead of working. Although both dd and ds were raised in the church, neither of them are active Christians, so I pray about this. I think dh and I must have done some things right, as both of our kids have grown into mature, responsible, loving adults. DH was once asked if he thought of himself as a successful person. DHs response was yes - neither child was in a gang, did drugs, were alcoholics, murdered anyone, or spent time in jail, etc. His answer surprised the person who asked the question (his employer at the time), because this man is a millionaire and to this day, is still just about the job and all about the money. (DH no longer works for this person.)
This past week, dh and I went to look at a rental property. The home is a newer 2 bedroom, 2 bath mobile home on ~3 acres. Behind the home there is a large storage area and a covered carport. We would be able to move our items still in storage (that we are paying for) to this area and save $50 a month. The home is very clean, bright and airy, and all the windows close and have storm windows. (A big plus in light of all the window issues we have here.) There is a large front porch with a terrific view. (I *do* love a front porch. )
The owners, who live next door, dont have a problem with Titan, chickens, gardens, or bees. The rent is less than we are paying now for a smaller, older, not well-maintained place. An additional plus is that there is a washer and dryer included in the rent, so we would save $20 to $25 a month by not having to go to the laundromat. The house has spring water, and it was a terrific sight to see running water that wasnt semi brown and oily looking. We are purchasing water now, so that would be more money not spent. There is also a shed with electricity that could be converted to a chicken coop. The yard has no fencing, but the owners have said putting up a fence would not be a problem. There is some minor work that needs done and the owners said we could barter work on the place in exchange for rent/security deposit.
As you can probably tell, DH and I really like this place. There are two cons. We would have to leave our current church, but we have changed churches before, so this is not the biggest thing against this move. The biggest issue, and I admit it is really big; is that neither of us have jobs in the area. Talk about a leap of faith. We are doing a great deal of praying.
