This is going to be somewhat disjointed as I am trying to get everything written down quickly before the computer throws me off - this library allows you 30 minutes and then kicks everything down for one minute before you can log on again!
TR and I have been too busy trying to get settled to keep coming to the library to check our emails and ss. I feel so far behind; I am sure it will take me a month to get caught up just with everyone's journals!
The guys did a great job on the jobs at the farmhouse and on the ham. But we still had 5 pounds left. So we donated it to the Christian Cafe today, as this is the Thanksgiving Ham Dinner week. Shawn, one of our friends from Christian Cafe, gave us some farm fresh eggs from his hens today. He has 4 hens (I think he still has Jersey Black Giants). He has one roo, but he hasn't reached his full size yet. His ladies just started laying in September.
We are still trying to get unpacked. I'll tell you a bit about the farmhouse we are renting. The house was built in 1880. There are 3 large bedrooms and 1 bathroom with a clawfoot tub upstairs. There is one bedroom and a bath with just a shower stall downstairs. The ceilings on the first floor are 7 or 8 feet high; I haven't estimated/measured the ones upstairs yet, but about the same. Most of the floors are the original wood. For the most part, the walls are plaster and lath. There are three floors, but the third floor is entirely attic space. It is filled with a bunch of stuff from the owner and his parents when they lived there.
From the back porch (north side of the house), there is a small mud room. Then there is a french door into the house. From the entry, you can go right into the kitchen or left into the hallway to the downstairs bedroom or bathroom. If you go straight from the french door, you would be walking up the stairs to the second floor.
The kitchen is large and has a small dining room connected to it on the west side. The previous tenant installed cabinets and a dishwasher on one wall of the kitchen. The dishwasher is very quiet, and it can barely be heard when it is running. The cabinets are nice, but don't have much shelf space, so I am improvising.
The previous tenants had their washer and dryer in the small dining area. On the wall opposite from the washer/dryer connections is a built in hutch with glass doors and cupboards underneath; which I am using as the pantry. This built-in takes up the entire wall.
If you walk through the kitchen, you are in the living room and formal dining room, which are one large room that measures 13 ft 5 inches wide by 27 ft 4 inches long. There are windows on the east and west walls, so the sun comes in each end of the room - depending on the time of day.
The front of the house just off the living/formal dining room has an enclosed sun room, which needs a great deal of work. Once we get it kicked into shape, it will be a great room! The owner's mother used to keep her piano and plants in there. She gave piano lessons for many years. About 20 years ago, one of our friends bartered painting and wallpapering for piano lessons. Anyway, this room has windows on all three sides and the majority of them face south.
The house is HUGE! It has a lot of potential, but needs lots of beautifying because the last tenants were ........ messy.
Our car insurance went down with the move and reduction of one car, so we got a refund check in the mail from them. I wish they would have just put it to our account. Go Figure!
Our old boy is having some age-related health issues. Titan is definitely having more "old man" days than "puppy" days recently.
At church, when ever someone requests prayers for someone, we send out a card letting the person know we are praying for them. This is done in rotating order by a number of the women at the church. I did this last year during August and September. But this year, I am the prayer card person for November and December. Between prayer cards, Christian Cafe, moving/unpacking, and working on a cookbook, I am really busy.
TR is working today, but has tomorrow off. Our friend Pat has asked that one of us be home tomorrow. So I think TR will most likely go help Don with his fall projects at the lake community where WOW is held during summer. I will stay home and do some more stuff around the farmhouse.
I made Easy Chili yesterday, but there wasn't much left. So I think we will be either going to Christian Cafe for diner tonight or I'll be making cheesy eggs. I will post the recipe for easy chili, I have already posted cheesy eggs.
Easy Chili
Ground beef, browned & drained (optional)
1 large onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, diced
1 large can diced tomatoes with juice
1 jar favorite salsa (I used 1/2 jar of Newman's Own Medium & 1/2 jar Newman's Own Mild)
1 or 2 cans black beans, drained
Sunday is Christ the King Soup Luncheon, which is a fund raising event for the UMCF couples group we belong to. I am making potato-carrot-garlic soup and garlic herb bread.
TR put out the bird feeders by the back porch. So far we have seen male and female cardinals, blue jays, titmouse, nuthatch, red headed woodpeckers, chickadees and sparrows. He was worried because we haven't seen any birds at all until we put the feeders out. I think a majority of the wild birds are living in the old barn and milk house. It seems that is the direction they fly in from the feeders.
It is 50 degrees today and the sun is shining. Last year at this time we had 23 inches of snow on the ground!
Have fun!
