We had 70s and rain early Saturday afternoon, but it cleared up before Laurie and Tim's wedding reception at church at 5 pm.

There were about 150 people in attendance...bride was gorgeous and groom very handsome. This is the groom's second wedding and his teenage son was his best man. We had the majority of the dinner dishes cleaned up and put away before the last dances took place. Cake was served on Chinet heavy duty cardboard plates with plastic forks, so we didn't have to wash that, which meant we were completely done with kitchen clean up by 9:15 pm.

TR's work schedule is completely whacked - Saturday and Sunday he worked 1st shift. Today and tomorrow he works modified 2nd, then he is off on Wednesday. Thursday he works modified 2nd shift again and then Friday he works 1st shift! I can't see how they can schedule him with less than 8 hours between shifts. The only response he is getting from his supervisor and dept head is that their dept is critically short handed....and there is a hiring freeze.

New blooms noticed yesterday - the sumac in our landlord's front yard. I took out the binoculars this morning and went out on the roof to identify the blossoms. I noticed that there are a ton of honey bees on the blossoms - and I do hope they are our livestock out there foraging near home.

We hit 80 on Sunday and 85 yesterday and we are going to be in the mid 80s through Thursday (as per the current forecast) so I need to take the Miller Feeder out of the hive and clean it well. The Essential Oils in the Honey-B-Healthy are supposed to limit mold growth, but I don't want to take any chances.

I hope to get some more pics taken today.

I removed the IPM (Integrated Pest Management) board from under the screened bottom board on Sunday to help with ventilation air flow. I have removed the entrance reducer for the same reason. At first the bees seemed a bit confused by the larger hive opening, but seem to be adjusting well.

Pollen coming in noticed Sunday and this morning - mostly golden yellow, some orange, very little white and very little pale yellow.

TR got the garden roto-tilled Friday night, but we haven't done any planting yet. The garden seedlings are on the back porch though just waiting. TR is SUPPOSED to have 4 days off near Memorial Day, but right now the schedule is only on revision 4 and so there is a possibility that his upcoming days off could change. He worked Memorial Day last year, and is guaranteed to have that day off according to hospital policy.

Memorial Monday TR and I will be heading to Canton, OH to celebrate the high school graduation of a cousin. I think Chris is off to Chicago or MIT in the fall. A lot of TR's relatives will be coming from NY, IL and WI, so it will be a great semi-family reunion.

May 30th will be 20 years since my mom went to be with the Lord. June 5th will be 20 years for my dad. I think this year I will plant some rosemary (from my garden plants) in the cemetery planters Memorial week-end. My sister C and I planted lavender last year, and hope the rosemary will do as well.

We are off to Jo-Ann Fabrics and the local quilt shop to find some fiber-filling for the teddy bears I made for the Liberian orphans.

Have a great day!

TR & I stopped at the local quilt shop yesterday afternoon. I explained to the co-owner there about needing fiber-fil for stuffing the teddy bears. (All I have at home is cotton quilt batting.) Anyway, he said they don't normally carry fiber-fil, but thought he had some in the back. He came out of the storage room carrying an almost full bag of the stuff. And he would not let me pay for it - because he thought it was a great project. What a blessing! So I bought some small things instead. As a result, we didn't need to go to JoAnn's Fabrics after all.

Yesterday I found out that I can either be the beekeeper or be the photographer, but I can't do both and get good pics! :( TR was napping before work while I was working the hive, so I made the attempt. Anyway, I have some pics, but mostly they are blurry to the point of nausea, so I didn't even download them to the flash drive to share. :)

Everything in the hive looks good, and a 3rd super isn't needed yet. I did remove the Miller Feeder and take it in the house to clean it, and took it back to the hive before filling. Believe me, the little ladies were :somad with me! I had to brush them off the Miller Feeder to get it into the house; not an easy thing to do, as they refused to stay off.

My smoker was going well until I closed up the hive to take the Miller Feeder back to the kitchen to clean. By the time I got back with it and the Bee Syrup, the smoker was almost out. So I removed the top cover and the inner cover, replaced the Miller Feeder, filled it with syrup, replace the inner cover and top cover all without the use of the smoker.

The lesson learned from trying to remove the Miller Feeder for cleaning is that being brushed is not a honey bee's favorite experience. Lots of buzzing around me, but happily still no stings to report.

After I got back into the house, the first thing I did was take a shower - that bee inspector jacket sure gets hot when the temps are in the upper 80s! What ever happened to white reflecting the sunlight?!

This has been a really rough year for Titan. We noticed this week that he gets completely exhausted if he walks the yard for more than 10 minutes at a time. TR thinks we need to talk to the vet about the end.... :( I admit I am not mentally ready for this discussion. The dilemma of quality of life. Some days he acts like an old man and some he acts like a puppy.

Tomorrow the Mary-Martha circle is meeting to work on quilts and teddy bears. I have been invited to attend this session. I have 4 bears in various states of completion, so even though TR has a day off work tomorrow, I may go to Mary-Martha just to get some more work done on the bears. Ron and Pat are leaving for Liberia the 2nd week of June.

Our temps are still in the 80s and our extended forecast is calling for more of the same throughout the week! Yippee!!

Enjoy life!

Wow, the bee keeping is so interesting.

Your wedding sounds like it went well. Thank goodness for paper plates. :D

The family reunion/ graduation sounds fun. It is always nice to catch up with out of town relations. Then they go home. :gig

That is the worst thing about big dogs. It is so hard to see them age and they age so much faster than smaller dogs do.

It has been about 4 years since we had to make that hard decision for our Sasha dog. She was a Siberian Husky and when she got to the point that she was worn out just walking around the house we knew it was time. A Husky that is too tired to play is just not a happy dog. It is still hard. I miss her.

If it is any help my D1 (the vet tech) always says to watch them when they eat their food. When they lose their enjoyment of their food or they are in constant pain - you know it is time. As long as they are looking forward to that next meal and you can keep the pain managed, then life is still worth living. The main thing is to put them first, which is very hard when you get so attached.

:hugs

My first Golden Retriever made it easier. He looked me in the eye and all but said "it's time." We'd been struggling with the decision but in that moment I knew. I've never had another animal do that.
I'm so sorry you're facing this with Titan. We have two aging dogs here and I dread it.

FF - Titan still relishes every meal, and that is the main thing we are keeping an eye on......

Upper 70s this morning, mid 80s this afternoon. It is actually hot outside!

I took some pictures of the bees this morning and have some great ones to share. However, the computer I am using here at the library does not have a usb port....so I will have to share another time. Maybe by then I'll have some more pics. :)

During the Mary-Martha circle meeting today I finished the bears with the exception of the face of one bear. I will finish them up later today. This Saturday is the wedding shower and Pat is going to display all the bears that have been made so far. Pastor Meredith is going to bless the bears during a service in June before Ron and Pat leave for Liberia. I may have time to get a couple more bears completed before then.

After this project is done, I need to make some more prayer shawls, as the ones I've made have been given away already.

TR has a Hospitality Team meeting tonight at church. I have some roasted artichoke hearts and dried tomatoes in the fridge I may use in salad for dinner.

Not worth noting......
I am obviously very low on the patience and tolerance scale today, so am headed home for some peanut butter. There is a woman talking very very very loudly at the librarian's desk about her health issues. She went and had her eyes dialated and then went to get pizza for lunch. The kid at the counter asked her if she wanted fries with her pizza! So she is ranting away at full volume. The librarians aren't saying anything to her..... But I wonder why do I have to hear this at the other end of the library?! :duc

Enjoy life!

We hit 85 yesterday and are forecast to stay between 70 and mid 80s through the Memorial week-end; perfect weather for Memorial Day planting.

TR and I started planting yesterday. Week-end is very full!

Have a terrific and safe Memorial Day week-end!
