Goldenrod is just starting to bloom in our area.
The girls in both hives are bringing in beautiful dark orange pollen and pale yellow pollen. Some are so heavily laden with pollen that their pollen baskets look like saddle bags.
Harvested more buckwheat, some nasturtiums pods, and some sunflower seeds today.
The Christmas Lima pole beans are finally taking off and are covered with bean pods. The Scarlet Runner beans are still doing well, too.
The foxtail millet is starting to turn reddish brown and the amaranth a beautiful golden orange color.
Our Thessaloniki tomatoes are starting to get bigger (still green), and our Brandywine are getting very large. These are from the July replants.
The basil (also July replant) is now 6 inches tall and very full. I think I will be making some pesto soon for fresh use.
The chocolate mint is in full flower and the bees have been visiting those plants.
A friend gave me a great load of heirloom tomatoes before she and her dh went on vacation for 2 weeks. We've been eating a lot of them fresh but I have been able to can some quarts of quartered tomatoes in their own juice as well. We will really appreciate these come winter.
We have been in the mid 80s during the day and got as low as 55 a couple nights this week. Today sunshine and blue skies rule the day!
This week-end, if the weather holds, I will be checking both hives again. I will be checking how hive #2 is doing with the new super I added last week-end. Then I need to check hive #1 for any more honey super frames to harvest or possibly remove for feeding to hive #2, if needed. This is just about the time to start prepping hives for winter so they can survive as healthy colonies.
Have fun!
