Depending on how tight the knitting is, you can use rice or popcorn. I remember my mom made a rabbit with popcorn (unpopped of course) stuffed legs. That was my favorite toy until it was destroyed from hard "use".

You were confusing me too!
I can knit a scarf. I have A LOT of scarves!
I have this beautiful yarn I spun from llama fiber. I look at it and think "little woodland animals." I'd like to make them for my kids to play with. So I guess the gauge shouldn't matter at all for that? If I crochet, I'd wind up using more yarn than if I knit, right? Could I use sheeps wool as stuffing? I hate that poly stuff and I have lots of sheeps wool.
:gig sorry - didn't mean to confuse you guys.

Crochet can use less yarn if you use double stitches, and have gaps (chains) between, but I've never specifically measured.

I guess you could use wool for stuffing, but it will compress over time, faster than the poly stuff would. They do make wool batting, but its very flat and compressed already (the ones I've seen) it can be super for a blanket or quilt.

you need to use small needles if you're going to be making something to stuff - or the stuffing will poke out.
Ah! Small needles. I have to remember that! Thank you!

I was just visiting my MIL and took her some of my soap. She suggested that marketing the soap with hand knitted/crocheted wash cloths in a mini basket might be a nice idea for our workplace craft fair in December. So now, I am knitting washcloths :D They are great for trying out different stitches you might like- I am loving the lace knitting with the heavier cotton.

One of my favorite wash cloths is made out of hemp yarn. That thing is INDESTRUCTIBLE! I got it in a craft swap years ago.

Great thread. :) I'm going to have to come back in a few months and ask questions. I was snowed in for much of last winter, it was too cold to do much except sit under a blanket, and I had yarn so I decided to try to learn to knit.

It was a VERY frustrating effort trying to duplicate what the hands in the book were doing! After a few weeks of trying, I made it into town where there was a knitting store and the woman taught me in five minutes, LOL. (casting on and knitting stitch anyway, which will make a scarf -- almost LOL).

I still have yarn. I hope not to get snowed in again, but I do expect chores to lessen (except keeping unfrozen water for the critters) so hopefully I can pick it back up this winter. Gonna need something to do with all that llama fiber, eventually. :)

You can also use 100% wool and knit a little "bag" to cover the soap sewn closed, you can felt it lightly over the bar of soap and use it as it is... put a rope on it so the soap can be hung up.
