Not having seen this thread yet, I talked to my mother on the phone a while ago. She said that anything that calls for ground beef is better with ground goat, and there is nothing in this world like stuffed cabbage made with ground goat. She wants me to raise up my future bucklings for meat. I don't think I can do it, but I could sell them and use the money to buy already-wrapped goat! Not efficient, I know, but turkeys first, next pigs, then maybe a beef, then....maybe............ :hit goaties....

oh no! sorry Free
:-(

i know its hard. i think the pigs are going to help you so you can kinda get a feel for it. or maybe you can take the goats to be dressed so you dont have to do it??

i have to say.... i'm kinda excited about goats for meat! we bred our full sized gal to the neighbors boer buck hoping to get a hefty boy for the grill.

When I was a teen we raised a lot of our own meat. Some chickens, pigs, steers, goats, rabbits. We were taught to distance ourselves from some animals and that it was ok to bond with others. I was ok with it, but the decisions were out of my hands. I really, really, really love goats, so I don't know if I could send one down the river, considering it would probably cost more per pound than buying a cut and wrapped one would cost, here in the urban/suburban place I call home, where everything like this costs a small fortune....if you can find it. So the heart-wrenching part, coupled with the cost factor....it becomes a no-brainer. So I will raise what my dad is willing to kill, and he doesn't want to do in the goats. He says it is just too hard on him and he doesn't want to do it anymore. He is fine with all the other critters, though. It must be something in his dna that he passed on to me!:p

you are the goat whisperer!!!

hee hee hee i'm such a goat "liker" not a goat lover. i think i kinda scared the breeder when i dropped Little Nibbles off... she asked me what buck i wanted and i said that she could decide what would be best for miss goatie (first freshening). and i said i didnt really care about the kids and whatever could be sold as pets (she is a mini). i think i sounded kind of cold but really i'm most concerned about Little Nibbles. we like her cuz we like her....and i'm hoping for some really rich milk!

hee hee hee i tease the neighbor kids that the only reason that her sister was sold and not on the BBQ was b/c i paid so much for her!

ok that was kinda true...

yikes!!

but i totally understand. i'm stuck with all these ducks b/c my hubby is back on the 'i cant do it' kick. drat. well look at me talking! i cant do it either!!

oh well
:)

We have "Farmer George" here in our area that will come to your house and "butcher" your animal up for you. (Excuse me for not knowing all the right terms here, I was raised by vegetarians and then lived in the city..he basically kills it for you and then gives it back to you wrapped up. Not sure if all the steps happen at your house or not. I assume not.)

Sad thing is he wont do chickens or rabbits, the animals I want to raise for meat. Oh well.

A little off topic - but it does have to do with goats
A former colleague of mine grew up in Hawaii. One year she flew back there for a friend's wedding, and told me she was taking a goat with her (!?). Apparently, goat is traditional at either Hawaiian or Phillapino weddings (I forget which, and both apply here). And, apparently, goat for eating is easier obtained in California than in Hawaii (who would have thought?). I asked her how she was carrying it, and didn't it take up a lot of room. Oh no, she said, it was in her regular luggage. She was wearing a top, shorts, and sandals; she really didn't need anything else, and anything that was needed could be borrowed from her friend. So all the luggage was devoted to goat.
Sorry for the hi-jack, but I found the whole idea very funny when she told me.

That is a funny story! My neighbor is Phillapino and says a goat is pit BBQed during all big get togethers. I told him to get to gettin' on his next big family get together. :p (I love Mister Ben, he is a wonderful neighbor, always here to get me out of any jams.)

Wow! I can't wait to get to the Mediteranean meat market to get lamb and goat! I am going Friday. He actually has like 20-30 sheep and goat in a very clean ,large pen (over 1/2 acre)next to the shop.(I have been looking at his animals every time I pass by :D ) The food stores here don't sell lamb-you have to go to Clearlake or Houston. I am looking forward to trying some recipes.
