Don't mean to scare you, but while we are on the subject of teeth I wanted to share a very recent incident re teeth cleaning.

My dear friend's brother had a cap replaced on one of his teeth earlier this month, followed by a very thorough teeth cleaning. That cleaning released a bacteria that lives in the mouth into his blood stream, causing a rare illness known as Lemierre's Syndrome. Lemierre's Syndrome caused him to think he had the flu for a few days. By the time he checked into the hospital, he was severely ill.

He is still in the hospital, now going on 3 weeks. I pray he is going to be alright. I have not gotten an update in a few days. :fl

So please keep this in mind if you start feeling ill after a thorough teeth cleaning.

(Due to her heart defects, my own daughter has to take antibiotics before ANY dental work is done. The bacteria that could be released into her blood stream could be fatal.)

Good to know BBH
thanks

but yikes, I go for a cleaning next Thurs and wasn't worried...now??
:/

but at least I know.

anything contaminating the bloodstream can be so severe to the body. I hope he does OK...long time to battle and get the old body back into a healthy mode after something like that. Prayers are with him!!

It is pretty rare, but if he had known he could have made it to a dr. sooner and the dr.s could have gotten a clue if he had mentioned his recent teeth cleaning. He spent 3-4 days suffering in ICU before anyone thought it necessary to mention his teeth cleaning, they really wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what was causing him to be so ill.

ETA: Thanks y'all for the prayers and good thoughts. :)

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm one of those who always wants to know "why". I hate the way we aren't given information or educated by doctors and nurses unless we badger them or ask for answers after the fact.
Still, it doesn't matter how many questions I ask; I always miss the important one. Now I end with "is there another question that I should be asking you?"

Good advice sylvie.

Just remember how close your big jugular vein in your neck is to your jaw. It takes the blood straight to your heart.

Hubby has Mitral Valve prolapse when he goes in for any dental work at all he has to take antiBs just as a precaution. I think it is more common than we are lead to believe...like everything else bad!

DS had AV canal, or a hole in the wall between the atria & ventricles. Dr was able to do an almost complete repair, the pinhole leakage gets smaller every year.

He also has to take anti's before any dental work. Also, he has metal staples in his sternum, so no MRI.

He's set off a couple of metal detectors

They cracked his chest at 3 months, big scar right between his pecs. Yep, metal surgical staples as the Dr wasn't 100% certain his sternum would heal without them.
