The place and animals are looking great! :thumbsup

I agree that farming sure pins you down. It is really hard to put a lot of chores on someone else. :/

We are going thru this ourselves, now that our neighbor (& long-time pet sitter) has moved away. The one person we've found that is willing to feed the cats & chickens wants $30/visit. :/

You'll have to balance your excitement/enthusiasm for the trip with the dowside of all the problems with someone else taking over the chores for you. You'll probably find it's not worth it. :p

And now you know why I had said I was so over chickens :p

That was part of my issue, so much I'd like to do off farm, with my family, but there's not really anyone who I can have come care for my animals. not anyone local, that is. I mean, I'm sure beccaOh would be willing, but it would be too much for her with a full time job, her own chores, and then mine, too.

I would stay home, let your hubby go. :) I like keljonma's idea of lining up help before the September vacation.

I have decided if I go on any trips away from home, it will be during the months when I'm not incubating chicks, breeding rabbits, milking goats or watching for kidding. So that pretty much means late fall or winter. But during that time of year it would be easier for me with my clan. You might talk with DH about taking a vacation around the animals needs and how that would be less stressful for you guys overall.

Hey, Lori, a couple of thoughts came to me as we were making brunch today. :D

Do you have any church friends that have the same animals as you?

Maybe you could barter taking care of your farm for taking care of theirs. Or at least find someone knowledgeable enough to do what needs to be done AND recognize if there is a problem.

We had a high school friend from church take care of The Ladies when we went away for the week-end. He charged very little, so we made a contribution to his college fund.

And around here there are signs up for bonded Livestock Sitters. I don't have any personal experience with them, but one of my friends was going to use them to care for her various poultry and horses. The sitters group told her they send one person to spend a few days working along side client to see what the routine was. I don't think my friend used the sitter group, though, because of the cost, which varies depending on what animals, number of animals, what chores needed done; too rich for her blood. But something to check into anyway, if it is available in your area.

Also would you get someone from your beek association or your mentor to check on the bees once while you are gone for an extended time?

Farmers taking vacations??? Really??? It CAN be done?? Hahaha!
Seriously, if it were me, and I didn't feel comfortable about leaving, I wouldn't go. Let hubby go if he wants to go..I hope you get it all figured out.

Well....in a moment of clarity he caved. When I re-informed him that we had 30 ducklings coming next week in addition to everything else he said okay he would go without me.

Since Tyler wants to try public school it looks like we are going to have to do the Atlanta trip (maybe) in late August since school starts Sept 6. :/

We also have big news.....I got a summer membership to the YMCA 7 minutes down the road. My children are WAAAAAAAAAAY too excited about the pool and since hubby can work out at the gym now I put the massive piece of gym equipment on CL this morning and hopefully we will be able to make a profit on it and get it out of the garage.

I also lined up a beach trip to Va beach for the day with my BF and her daughter so the kids are excited about that. My children are currently in their bathing suits whining about going to the pool and since it is like Africa hot, I think we'll go for the day. All the chores are done until this evening and the girls all have fresh water so everyone should be good. We went to the pool for a couple hours yesterday but then a storm blew up and we were forced to leave. They close the pool if there is thunder.

I have a bit of an off flavor in my goat milk. It has a slight aftertaste to it, not enough to make me stop drinking it but it's there. What can I do to make it go away? Can I add something to her diet....I was thinking of giving her some BOSS and beet pulp pellets in with her feed.

My cheese turned out okay. It tasted very bland and slightly like feet but I crumbled it up on a homemade pizza last night and everyone ate it none the wiser.

I gotta get some real cheesemaking stuff. I also got a container of greek plain yogurt to use as a starter and I think this weekend's project will be yogurt making 101.

I also have to check the bees Saturday after the funeral and I will definitely have hubby man the camera so i can show everyone and get Keljonma to see what she thinks!

Happy wednesday everyone!!!
