Have you ever tried round penning Mylie?

My all time favorite guru is John Lyons (not to be confused with his son Josh). He has an old video out called "Round Pen Reasoning" that works on getting a horses trust and compliance. I have used his techniques and they really REALLY work.

One horse I worked with took over 45 minutes in a STALL to halter. After working him in that manner within 20 days he would work a 50 foot circle around me in the middle of a big arena with no tack on him what so ever and he was riding pretty well in 30 days.

The book is called "Lyons on Horses". It is probably easier to find than the video, but the video is BETTER.

I'm with FF. It sounds like a round pen may do her some good.

When I have hand-shy small animals, I usually hand feed every meal to them. It's a huge pain but they learn FAST to associate good things with me.

I would round pen her but I haven't got a round pen yet, so it may be a little difficult ;) I've been waiting to round pen her as I follow Clinton Anderson and he round pens shy and nervous horses to build trust, ect.

I won't have a round pen until the end of the month, and even then its probably going to be a 40ft until we can afford to buy a few more panels. Its not possible to sink posts for a roundpen and expect it to still be round here, so we have to buy a metal one.

I really like John Lyons too...

I do Parelli natural horsemanship games with my horse... I could mail you some info on that if you wanted. That's helped my mare and I a lot, but the packages are expensive and I was lucky enough for someone to give me them.

That would be awesome. I know my neighbour is into Parelli but its super expensive. A group of Parelli enthusiasts sometimes rent her arena in the winter. I've good things about John Lyons but I've been having a hard time finding anything on him in stores. I can't really use my visa to get anything online, so I've been in and out of book stores and tack shops but no one has anything!

Those puppies are adorable!

Clicker training is great for horses- it is actually really calming for them. I have been to a couple of Buck Brannaman type clinics (run by his DIL) a couple of years ago. I think a lot of those old guys have about the same ideas, especially Buck and John Lyons. Parelli is marketed too much for my taste, but it works, too.

Good luck with her.

I love clicker training with Mylie. I feel like we actually get something acheived at the end of each tiny session, even if I only have her target something like 3 times. Since she isn't really so happy about me touching her, I've been having her target the awesome massage brush right on my chest. She has to pretty much touch me to get her treat and now I can give her a good pat afterwards.

Daina is coming here this weekend and she wants to ride Mylie! She said if the conditions are okay we can go over to Bridle Path and pick up a cinch and pad and she'll see where Mylie is training-wise. Ride her in the field. If its kind of crap out, we may just lunge her a bit. And I'm getting my roundpen NEXT week :D Because mum sold another puppy so we'll have enough for a whole round pen, woot.

Looks like I may be getting my roundpen a bit earlier than expected. There is a guy near me who ships in from the US, asks around $1475 for a 50ft quality metal roundpen and he has like 3 left from the 15 they just shipped in. He said I can put a deposit on one to hold it until mum gets paid next week, so hopefully tomorrow morning I'll be able to go round there and drop a deposit off. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Okay better not get my hopes up too much, but you have no idea how big a deal this is to me.

That's fantastic... I would LOVE to have a round pen to work in... I have an arena, but it's not the same when you're trying to work up close and they have 80x180 feet to run around in :)

Congrats on the round pen!

Ohhh I know! I have a 60x120 ring but I'd prefer the roundpen instead, we're just going to stick it in there and use the big bottom field if we want to jump or something, but truthfully i can just ride down my road to my neighbours place and use her indoor if i wanted to.
