If nothing turns up comfortably within budget and truly-suitable *now*, remember that horses will be cheaper in late summer and fall and early winter... ;) Your problem is largely that this is the peak horse-buying time of the entire year, thus horses are priced up accordingly.

If you had a truck and trailer I'd suggest shopping in NY State and importing, but if you had to pay a commercial trucker that'd put a significant dent in your budget, plus of course there's the costs of *going* there and shopping. Horses are a lot cheaper down there, right now, than around here though.

Good luck, I'll keep an ear out for you,

Pat

I am sure you will be able to find Mylie a fantastic home, from what you have said, she has tons of potential. :)

"Finding" your new horse will be a fun adventure.

I've only been horse shopping once in my life. All the others (11) I've owned were either hand-me-downs from my big sister or were rescued. Care if I live vicariously through you during your horse hunting adventures? :p Take lots of photos for us!

I know Pat, actually its really annoying because we have a big truck that is more than capable of hauling but we haven't found a trailer! I almost had one a few months ago but it sold before I could go look at it.

The problem with fall/winter shopping is that I won't be here and so it'll be a good few months before my horse gets anything more than fed, brushed, and maybe lunged if its not too icey out. I'm looking between now and mid summer when show season has already started. I do have one prospect so far if she's still available, a 4 year old 15hh working bred QH (unregistered) mare. Seller says she goes well on the trails/roads and is being ridden under saddle. I'm hoping to go and look at her and maybe ride her. I'll need to get video to send off to Daina who is leaving today to go back to Calgary, but I'm not opposed to putting small deposit on a horse to secure them until I send off and get feedback on the video footage, yanno?

I'm actually going to head out now to put up some posters for my saddle and look at posters at the tack shop for horses lol. Still getting my round pen this week though :D

WELL, looks like I got a cowboy type guy coming out from Almonte today to look at Mylie. He said he'd be here around 5pm, he offered $500 for her and I'm happy to take it since he has to hook up his trailer and drive all the way here. If he doesn't take her I have a nice german lady who owns a big Dressage barn out west of Toronto who is interested in her, and a girl from Guelph who was interested in coming out tomorrow.

And Saturday I'm going to look at a 4 year old greenbroke QH mare.

And if anyone is interested in seeing it, this is Mylie's ad :)

I keep meaning to update this but I never get very far! I picked up our round pen the other day and its all set up in one of the fields ready for Luna to be turned out in it. She's still on the bottom pasture and will be until the farrier has done her feet, and then I'll move her up because I have some posts to sink for a run-in shelter before.

Ugh and as for horse shopping, I'm so annoyed right now. I emailed a local about a horse they had for sale and gave them my phone number to call me if they wanted (most won't, they'd rather email) yeah well this one likes to phone. Yesterday he called me FOUR TIMES, starting at 7:50am and left a message. Most people at that point would email the person because, hey..maybe their phone is dead. Today he called me again at 6:02pm. I'm really not a phone person and I've just found out from someone else this mare may be only 15hh and thats far too short and her build isn't wide enough that her barrel would accomodate my legs so its really not *worth* going to see her, though I may because she's only in Stirling. I'm just ANNOYED that someone would call me THAT many times and that early. That is not the way to sell your horse, and just makes you look kind of desperate.

I wasn't able to answer my phone most of the times and just found out they called me all those times today when I finally got my phone charger (lost my charger) but really, 5 times? and they called the day before as well about 3 times... You would think after not getting an answer, you'd email... right?

An update on my horse search...

It has been called off due to severe financial concerns, the goats have been put up for sale and Luna may end up looking for a new home as well.

I can't really go into detail but I may not even end up at University in the fall as I don't qualify for a loan anymore and don't qualify for OSAP.

I hope so too! We decided to take this summer to get the run-in shelters up, fix the fencing Mylie destroyed, and perhaps put Luna in a months worth of groundwork/groundmanners training at a local stable and start looking again at horses in the winter-next summer. The bonus is I just got word of getting a ginormous amount of money back on taxes, like $1400!! so I think I'm going to use that to pay for riding lessons while I'm in university through the York U Equestrian Club (they run out of a stable closeby and carpool/transit is available). I'd be able to pay for NINE MONTHS of lessons!!! :D

Anyhow, I think we're keeping the goats too -_- my dad was supremely angry when I posted them online so they're stickin' around. Plus we haven't had a lot of rain and I'm having doubts as to whether we'd have pasture enough for a second horse this year, its soooo dry and I may be looking at feeding hay this summer to Luna.

LOL I am having no luck at all this week, I guess the posts must have shifted a bit while being cemented into place for the run-in shelter and the one side is out...

Right side we have at the top 131.5" and 1ft down from there 131.5" and then at the bottom its 130.5"

On the otherside its 132.5" all the way down... Geez, Oh well! I suspect that is due in part to the gigantic rock we encountered, I'm not going to lose sleep over it...

We are starting to put the 2x4 strapping on the two sides, 5 pieces from 7ft to the bottom and the siding will go over that, we have to order 16 footers for the back so we decided to buy our 12 foot ones now and do the two short sides, then order the other stuff including all the roofing stuff in one go and have it delivered. We also bought tomato plants ;)

I'm hoping this shelter lasts, I'm going to put earth anchors in as well ... not that they'll be much help really but just in case. Its 9ft high at the front and 7ft at the back and approx. 12ftx10ft (we're putting a 3rd post in the back wall by the way at 6ft).
