This week we are in the 80's and that is odd for Ohio too. The older I get the more I like 70's or below. I'm just trying to keep animals cool with fans and lots of fresh water. I also add the horse electrolytes. The alpacas love the cherry flavor. The only good thing is that some alpacas that I have been waiting to give birth, are finally giving birth. I think they were waiting for warmer weather!

Hope it cools down for you soon. it is supposed to be in tehe 70's this weekend which I'm looking forward to.
I had the electrolytes in Luna's water but I've run out since I cleaned out her water bucket yesterday... can't get anymore until I go to Orono (about 40 minutes away) since none of my local shops carry the electrolytes I use (and I know Luna likes). Mine are "fruit punch" flavoured ;) I can't keep fans on outside so the goats are out in the pen during the day, the pony has a full trough of cold water and I cool her down with some cold water every couple days.

Isn't it amazing how well the electrolytes work? Alpacas have a huge problem with heat stress and I know I have averted that on a number of occasions just by putting the electrolytes in their water. Of course I'm sure the fans on in the barn help too. Once in a while I get out the hose and hose everyone's legs down. The alpacas love that. You have to be careful with that though because if you get the water on their back, then it turns into a heating source and heats them up more. Wet wool baking in the sun!

I have started giving the electrolytes to the goats too and they are drinking it as well. I have tried all the different flavors with the alpacas and the only flavor that they drink down is cherry. So now that is what I buy. I do have to travel a bit to get cherry flavor though. For some reason the local TSC only carries orange flavor and the alpacas refuse to drink the water with that in it.

Haha... yeah my TSC (which isn't even local, its a 30 minute drive) carries horse electrolytes in a tub which cost a small fortune and you have to measure out but they're Apple flavour. I haven't tried those yet so when I get some money I may buy a tub for the pony. Instead I was buying Quenchlyte electrolyte crystals from the Co-op (not near here, 40 minutes away) which come pre-measured in little satchels. I soaked the goats today lol with the cold water hose before putting them back in their shed until the sun went down a bit, they'll go out around 7pm and stay out until 12am tonight.

Here's something awesome today. My brother, though totally grounded for skipping detentions at school, has got a cool school project going on in Science class. They're doing the "TomatoSphere" experiment. He's growing tomatoes, 3 of his seeds were on the space station and 3 weren't and they have to grow them and figure out which ones were on the space station by looking for mutations due to radiation. Kind of cool...

so far Kevin has managed to sprout 5 of his 6 tomato seeds and all are doing great, I'm so proud of him.

Hey, that is pretty cool. It will be interesting to see if he ends up with some mutated tomatoes or something. :D

When we went to pick up my brother from his friends place this afternoon (mom, awesome person, has horses as well!) and they had just gotten some kittens. They already have TONS of barn cats, so she offered us a kitten. I love kittens, how could I resist? We ended up with 2 boys to add to our existing fixed boy cats from the humane society. These two will end up fixed eventually as well. Both boys!

Sooo, none of us can decide on names, so we came to you guys! Name our barn kitties!
