Oh it would actually be pretty much impossible unless the vet gave me some Atravet/ACE. Mylie is still too skittish for it to be safe to work around her feet, and more so in this kind of weather (the footing!). If it were just dirt and frozen ground then I'd consider fighting with her to treat her, but right now... its way too dangerous.

Well Mylie is moving better today and I woke up to her rolling in the snow so that is a good sign shes on the way to recovery.

I decided to do a 3-day dosage of Bute for her, I mixed her dose in with her feed made into a mash today and she gobbled it down. Then lol I went to feed the pony and she came energetically trotting up the hillside to see me. Very super excited and looks like shes super pleased with the snow we're getting right now.

When I got down to the gate at her field she trotted away by the riding ring then let off this ENORMOUS buck and went cantering around the field for about 10 minutes. Bute or not, definitely feeling better!

It would be quite unusual for a horse to be bruised-soles lame on both hind feet but not forefeet. (Barring a recent trim, anyhow).

I don't know exactly what she was doing, what exact way she was "off", but if she was moving restricted in the hind end, the likeliest cause would be a sore back or pelvis e.g. from a slip on the ice (or in some cases from walking too carefully on slippery ice for too long, and getting sore muscles, but this is much less likely in general). A mild colic would be another possibility, depending on the actual symptoms.

Anyhow I am glad she is looking better now :)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

lol well given that she is half draft (even if the Friesian is a light draft, shh don't tell her!) she would be more prone to having low soles. My poor gelding got bruised soles on all 4's every winter!

there are some frozen poop piles she easily could have stepped on and bruised a sole, I stepped on one putting down peat for a pathway and I thought I was going to die! I need to buy a pick axe or something to get rid of them lol. She definitely was muscle sore though, probably because she is way out of shape and had been walking on ice for quite a while and has slipped a couple times. It was barely noticeable, but as my coach said if the neighbour noticed it, then I couldn't see it, then I saw it its possible she had both a bruised hoof and muscle pain! Phew, that was a lot! lol. I couldn't believe the buck she did, she was bum over head, full on bronc buck! Now thats way more Mylie than she had been acting all week. She's still a little off, but its getting better :)

No colic here! She was pooping well (and I stepped in enough fresh piles to know this lol), eating well, drinking fantastically (heated bucket, I fill it all the way up probably every day and a half) and has normal gut sounds. I'm not really concerned about colic with her, its the pony who is more likely to colic since in windy weather she won't drink but even she is fine.

Has anyone seen the commercial for Lynn Crawfords "Pitchin' In"? Its all about finding out where your food comes from and all that jazz? I love the scene where shes being a "sheppard" and the sheep jumps up at her and bounces off her LOL.

I agree with Pat - sore backs can cause lameness as well as all kinds of behavioral issues that people often mistake for bad attitude or nastiness... which is how my mare "Mousey" got to be known as "Pissy". We have a licensed Equine Chiropractor coming out hopefully next week to give her an adjustment. The cost is $65 - I think it can be alot higher, but worth looking into.

Edited to reflect the person I was agreeing with.. LOL

Mylie's attitude is great, she was just off in the back end and seemed kind of down because of it. Over the last few days she's been as perky as she was before, and that buck was a definite sign that she is well on the way to being comfy and happy again.

I agree, a good equine chiropractor is worth their weight in gold.

We used to have one at the stables I used to board my horses, her name was Dr. Jackie. Some of the skeptics called her Dr. Quacky, hee hee.

Hope your pretty pony-girl get well soon. :)

I don't even think we have any chiro's out here :( but I'll look around, I know of at least 2 massage therapists but thats not the same lol.

We're not in a high competition area like Uxbridge or west of Toronto/GTA and all that so we don't tend to have a lot of specialists or anything.

The massage therapists might be able to refer you to someone. I found out about the one coming next week by word of mouth. If your feedstore has a bulletin board, you might also find a business card or flyer.
I'm glad Mylie is feeling better. :clap
