Yes, they all got Molly's ears, even the ones that are not hers!

Molly and Ginger's mother was a solid black nigy mix so I think that is where all the black came from. Their nubian dad looks like Ginger. The buck I used was chocolate and white patches....what is the proper way to describe this color pattern? I want to call them pinto pony colors but what is the right term? Little Sebastian looks like his dad, but also like Molly.

Hubby is crushed we didn't get any more doelings. I'm just happy we got ONE and I like her so much, I'm very pleased.

When I tell him Java got four doelings and one buckling he is going to :ep :bow :thumbsup

Well we got Molly (first freshener) up on the stanchion tonight. Molly is shy. She likes to jump on things to eat but wasn't anxious to get up there. I had not fed her for a few hours hoping to make her hungry but she was too scared to eat. I had to drag her in there on a lead. She was not ABOUT to be bribed with grain this time. She knew the evil torturers wanted to squeeze boobies. Bwa Ha Ha Ha.........

In any event, we hoisted her up and hobbled her back legs (thanks Glenolam for that suggestion) and put her baby on the table just like we did Ginger. We were heartened to see her lick and nuzzle Sebastian finally, she has fallen in love with him after all. Thank goodness. In any event, I start to try to milk the full side (kid had only nursed the left side) and it was real full and painful, so she manages to lay her back end flat onto the stanchion, flattening her udders to the stanchion! Hubby had to hold her body off the ground for me, especially at first until I got it going and emptied out. We wanted to be "boss goat" but Molly is also the nervous type so we were trying to make it a good experience.
After my hands were tired, my son milked Molly on that side and finally we let Sebastian nurse that side until he could not get any more. He is so cute, he does a lot of that head butting of the udder when he nurses....so funny! He is going to be a little corker. I think Molly relaxed and liked it after that. She was in a much better mood that I could visibly see. I think her udder has been hurting for awhile. Her udder has a different feeling to me than Gingers...more like one big round ball held tighter against her body when full whereas Ginger's feels more like two distinct sides that hang lower. Maybe someone can tell me what that means about the quality of their udders.

I've decided to try to milk Molly every day so she gets used to it and because she only has one kid. I found it much easier to milk her, it comes out real fast and I can make a stream come out for a long long time. I would also like to breed Molly more than Ginger because she has two teats and her offspring could be better, so getting Molly to be a good milker is important for me. The one thing that surprised me is that both of my does, although they usually LOVE grain, were too nervous to eat while being milked. I don't think they will grow to like milking time if they don't eat....although if they are too full they may like the relief.

So I put Donald out into the chicken yard again, but this time with a thick bed of hay and ............don't laugh.......wearing a dog coat. I have one that looks a lot like a horse jacket and it fit Donald perfect. He can't seem to chew it either. We never really use it anyway, it was another one of those "donated" things I have that I could not get rid of.
I was going to put all the kids in the one stall but Ginger and Molly were having a fight about them and they are not getting along. When I tried to part Ginger from the babies, she was having NONE of it. I think she would have kept the family up all night. She will not tolerate me putting them where she can't see them and was head butting Molly again so they just didn't like that idea.

So Donald has to wear the coat. At least the temps are not as cold tonight....it is 50 degrees right now although it will probably be 30 by morning (I know, those of you in Ohio are smirking). The bitter cherry worked to keep him away from the cords today. You should have seen the funny faces he made though after he tasted it! I laughed so loud it scared him. He does not like bitter cherry!

But in any event other than having vertigo spells twice today and falling and conking my head on the ice, we had great adventures in goat land on Dizzy Dog Ranch today.

I'm so glad to hear that Molly is coming around :) Aren't you just in love with these little things? I can't believe it's all over already, but I am happy to be able relax now.

great work!

i dont feed my gals ONE BITE unless they are on the stand. as soon as they figured that out they pretty much they push each other down to get up there now. and then i let them eat as much as they want - and by that time i'm done milking.

i know it sounds funny, but goats will read your body language like dogs do. so when you march out there - really MARCH out there and think to yourself "i AM the boss goat"

and once the babies stop nursing off them so much (you'll get to the point where you'll separate the babies at nite so you can have the morning milk) the does will want the pressure on the udder relieved. so they will start liking it.

i also use the time on the stand to brush them so they get used to me poking and proding at them.

i'm so glad molly is such a good milker!
